      S. Korea reports 23 new cases of MERS, bringing total to 87

      2015/06/08 07:50

SEJONG, June 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korea confirmed an additional 23 cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) on Monday, bringing the total number of people diagnosed with the potentially deadly disease here to 87.

The number of patients marks the second-largest in the world after Saudi Arabia, which has reported over 1,000 confirmed cases since it reported the world's first-ever case in 2012, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

The ministry said 17 of the 23 new patients were infected while visiting Seoul's Samsung Medical Center, one of 24 hospitals in the country that have been affected by the acute respiratory illness.

The remaining six were infected while visiting two other hospitals, the ministry said.

The 14th infectee was estimated to have transported the virus from the Pyeongtaek St. Mary's Hospital, where the first patient was hospitalized for three days from May 15, to the Samsung Medical Center as he traveled to Seoul by bus from the hospital in Pyeongtaek, some 60 km south of Seoul.

Those infected at the Samsung Medical Center soared to 34. People catching the virus at the Pyeongtaek hospital were unchanged at 37.

The remaining six new cases came from the 16th patient at two hospitals in Daejeon, a city at the center of South Korea.

              Only teen MERS patient recovers

              By Kim Se-jeong

A teenager who was diagnosed with the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) has recovered from the disease and was sent home, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Monday.

The 16-year-old boy, whose name was withheld, was the first and only teenage patient...

The boy was confirmed as a MERS patient on June 4 after contracting the disease at Samsung Medical Center (SMC) where he was being treated for a brain tumor. He was admitted to the hospital on May 27 and received surgery to remove the tumor. He showed no sign of complications involving respiratory problems, according to a ministry official. His father who was with him to care for him also contracted the virus.

The teenager's case took the health authorities by surprise in the beginning, because it was believed children were virtually immune to the virus.

No other adolescents have been confirmed with the disease, but hundreds of teenagers remain under medical surveillance.
              ...
Two more patients have died of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), raising the death toll to 27, the Ministry of Health and Welfare said Monday. ...
