    Seoul confirms third MERS death

With the diagnosis, the deceased is the sixth tertiary MERS infection case in the country, and the first death among them. He had been staying at the facility since May 9 for pneumonia, and shared a six-person hospital room with the 16th confirmed patient from May 28 to 30.
    ...
As of Thursday, 28 out of 35 confirmed patients had all been infected at the same facility, which is the second of the four hospitals the first patient stayed at prior to his May 20 diagnosis. He stayed there from May 15 to 17. Up until Wednesday, the Health Ministry had been claiming that the first patient was the sole spreader of the disease in the facility, meaning all 28 of them were infected by the 68-year-old only, not by each other.

Yet Thursday, Kwon Jun-wook, a senior Health Ministry official leading an emergency task force team, said there is a possibility that tertiary infection cases may have already occurred at the facility from May 18 until May 29, the day the hospital was temporarily shut down. During this period, the first patient was not present in the facility.

Questions have been raised over the particular hospital?s sanitary conditions as well as sterilization practices. The hospital, which houses about 400 beds, opened in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, in February. The building is reportedly less than a year old.

While the number of cases keeps growing, the Health Ministry is currently investigating if the virus has mutated in Korea and became more contagious. The investigation results is to be released on Friday the earliest.

Fears of the deadly virus that causes Middle East respiratory syndrome only expanded Thursday as Seoul confirmed third death, five more cases, as well as a potential outbreak in the military. Health authorities Thursday confirmed that an 82-year-old man, who shared a hospital room with the 16th confirmed MERS case patient last month and died of multiple organ failure on Wednesday, has been posthumously diagnosed with...

MERS infects a doctor in Seoul, officer

Fear of a second ‘super-spreader’ as death toll rises to three

    June 05,2015
    ...
Three of the six new cases, including the doctor in Seoul, the 82-year-old who died, and a 69-year-old male are third-generation MERS infections, meaning they were contracted from people who were infected by Patient No. 1, 68, who tested positive on May 20 after returning from a 16-day business trip to the Middle East.

The 82-year-old and 69-year-old shared a hospital room with Patient No. 16 between May 28 and 30. Patients No. 23 and 24 contracted the disease from the same man, raising the possibility that Patient No. 16 may be a so-called super-spreader, someone whose is more infectious than other sick people.

The infection of the doctor working at the hospital in Seoul, who is Patient No. 35, was believed to be passed from Patient No. 14.
    ...
Patient No. 14 stayed in a hospital ward with Patient No. 1 from May 15 to 17. He travelled to the Seoul hospital by an intercity bus with other passengers on May 27, and the health authorities were not aware of it.

After arriving in Seoul, he had difficulty breathing and called 119 for help. He was sent to a nearby hospital, where he transmitted the disease to Patient No. 35, who was treating a patient in the bed next to his.

The health authorities have not tracked down passengers on the bus...

Korea has a total of six third-generation patients...

The death of the 82-year-old patient, or Patient No. 36, is the first case of a fatality in the third generation. He shared the same six-patient hospital room with Patient No. 16 from May 28 to 30.
    ...
The fact that Patient No. 1 transmitted the disease to 30 out of 36 patients has suggested that the strain spreading in Korea might be different from the one spreading in the Middle East.

“We will explain a possible mutation of the strain as soon as possible, probably tomorrow,” Kwon said in Thursday’s briefing.

South Korea Reports 3rd Death From MERS Virus

    By CHOE SANG-HUNJUNE 4, 2015

    SEOUL, South Korea ? ...

The 82-year-old was being treated for asthma and pneumonia in late May when a new patient arrived in his hospital room. That patient later turned out to be carrying the virus. Three other patients in that room have since tested positive.

An earlier test on the 82-year-old showed that he was not infected, and he was under quarantine for further observation when he died, officials said.
    ...
The government has refused to disclose the names and locations of six hospitals where it said the MERS cases were discovered. All of the infected were either patients, medical staff members or visitors. The government has raced to track down all those who may have come in contact with the MERS patients, isolating more than 1,660 people in their homes or at state-run facilities to see if they develop symptoms of the virus.

South Korea Reports Third Death as MERS Cases Rise

Latest cases raise the total number of South Korean MERS patients to 36

    By JEYUP S. KWAAK
    Updated June 4, 2015 7:54 a.m. ET

South Korea reported a third death from an outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome on Thursday, as a rising number of cases added to public anxiety about the virus and kindergartens, schools and universities remained closed across the country.

A 82-year-old man who died on Wednesday tested positive for MERS, the country?s health ministry said.

The man had been hospitalized since early last month after suffering from fever and shortness of breath and he was also being treated for asthma and pneumonia. He spent days in the same hospital rooms as previously-confirmed MERS patients, the ministry said.

Mers: South Korea closes 700 schools after third death
    2 hours ago
    From the section Asia

More than 700 schools in South Korea have been closed as a third person died from the Mers virus and the number of people infected rose to 35.
South Korean authorities have been criticised over their response to the outbreak after one infected person went to play golf and another flew to China.
More than 1,600 people have now been quarantined, according to officials.
The outbreak is the largest outside the Middle East, where the disease first appeared in Saudi Arabia in 2012.
Five more cases were confirmed on Thursday, the South Korean health ministry said, bringing the total number of known infections in the country to 35.
The latest victim died in hospital after contracting the virus from another patient in the same room.
