  • South Korea - Government announces 5 new coronavirus MERS cases - cumulative total now equals 30 - June 2, 2015

4 patients are contacts and/or family members of contacts of the original patient who came from the Gulf (#1149).

1 patient is a contact of secondary case #1181 and is, therefore, a tertiary case (like cases #1191 & #1192).

Clarification from WHO would be greatly appreciated.

        S. Korea reports 5 additional cases of MERS

        2015/06/03 08:10

        SEJONG, June 3 (Yonhap) -- ...
        ...
The ministry said the four new patients came in contact with the first patient at an undisclosed hospital in mid-May.

The country also confirmed an additional case of tertiary infection in a 60-year-old male who had shared the same hospital room with one of the patients diagnosed earlier.

The case marked the third of its kind in South Korea and reportedly in the world.

The health ministry earlier said no tertiary transmission of MERS had been reported throughout the world, a reason it had long insisted on isolating only the people who had come in close contact with the first patient.

Shortly before the country confirmed two cases of tertiary transmission Tuesday, the government changed its stance, largely as a precautionary measure, and began isolating those who have come in close contact with anyone diagnosed.

The number of people in isolation is soon expected to reach over 750 while ministry officials say the number may quickly explode.

I think this assumption can not be made by the newspaper. There are many details about the 1017 domestic Saudi cases that are not known.

MERS-infected S.Koreans rise to 30, tertiary infection added

            ...
Among the five new cases was one tertiary infection, sending the total number of contagion from the secondary infection to three, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

A 77-year-old woman and three men aged 43, 55 and 58 each were infected from the patient zero for three days from May 15 at the hospital, which the first patient visited secondly.
            ...
The tertiary contagion was a 60-year-old man who shared a room with the 16th infectee for about a week from May 22. The 16th infected man, 40, also transferred the MERS corona virus to two others.

The 16th infectee was initially excluded from the government's isolation list, and was later tested positive for the viral disease after the health authorities conducted a broader range of epidemiological survey.

UPDATE 2-South Korea reports 5 more cases of MERS illness
              ...
South Korea has quarantined or isolated about 1,300 people for possible MERS infection.

Of the five new cases, four had been in the same hospital as the first patient, a 68-year-old man who had just returned from a trip to four countries in the Middle East. The other, a 60-year-old man, caught it from another infected person.

Media said health authorities were conducting tests on an elderly patient who died on Sunday after sharing the same hospital ward with one of the two MERS-infected people who had died. Officials said it was likely she died of existing illness.

More than 200 schools, most in the province of Gyeonggi around the capital, Seoul, and where the first death occurred on Monday, were shut for the week, the Education Ministry said.
