  • Global coronavirus MERS case fatality rate is 29% - May 13, 2014

    Thinking out loud....

At this time the Saudis claim 152 deaths not including 3 exported deaths. So the real number is 155. Adding 18 which is the known deaths in other countries - total deaths is approximately 173.

Total known global cases is 588.

This is a case fatality rate of approximately 29%.

Saudi Arabia has stopped reporting their asymptomatic cases so this rate will increase over time.

Secondary cases usually has a cfr lower than primary cases, but cfr estimates for MERS is difficult because of a huge amount of unknowns.

The Florida imported case caught the infection from an unknown hospitalized patient.

How large is the iceberg below the tip we're seeing?

It may be quite big, since MERS-CoV has been found in camels in various parts of Middle East (with a great viral sequence homology with human isolates)...
