Re: The first case of the new Coronavirus in Italy

Unfortunately, Italian Ministry of Health did not offer details about the onset date, the number of close contacts under surveillance, the clinical course and the possible number of health care workers exposed without proper PPE adherence, a common feature in Italian hospitals and A&E departments.

To release a press statement without details is the like a shot in the dark.

It would also be nice to know if the WHO or the Jordanian MoH is following up on the son's case of "flu".

Thank you for the update, IanM. I hope that the 2 contacts were confirmed per the WHO guidelines. It seems to read that way, even though they didn't get LRT samples:

Both secondary cases were classified as confirmed on the basis
of a combination of clinical (influenza-like illness),
epidemiological (close contact with the index case)
and laboratory data, according to WHO guidelines [4].
Nasopharyngeal swabs of both secondary cases tested
positive only in the screening assay (real-time PCR to
detect the regions upstream of the E gene), probably
due to the known limitations when using upper respiratory
tract specimens [5,9]. Although required [7], lower
respiratory tract specimens were not available.

WHO classified these two individuals as "probable cases" in September 2013. http://www.who.int/csr/don/2013_09_20/en/

20 September 2013 - Two patients earlier reported as laboratory-confirmed with Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection in Italy in the Disease Outbreak News on 2 June 2013 are being reclassified as probable cases.

The reclassification follows further analysis of the laboratory tests performed in May 2013, which has shown that the two cases do not fulfil the current WHO case definition for a "confirmed case" for MERS-CoV. The two cases are the two-year-old girl and a 42-year-old woman who were identified as close contacts of the index case who travelled from Jordan.
A "probable" designation by WHO criteria refers to patients who are considered to have a high likelihood of having been infected with MERS-CoV, but from whom adequate samples could not be obtained for complete testing according to the current criteria established for laboratory confirmation.

Thanks, Al! That clears that up, though it surprises me that the samples from the upper tract don't quite count even of you have PCR. I guess they don't consider the infection well established yet.
