Orizaba, Veracruz .- Upon detection of some cases involving acute flaccid paralysis in this region of central Florida, the Health Secretary, Paul Anaya Rivera, visited hospitalized patients in the Rio Blanco Regional Hospital and the IMSS, and made a call for people not to be alarmed, because the disease is not contagious or life-threatening and can be linked to the winter season.

Following the instructions of Governor Javier Duarte de Ochoa, to give immediate attention to patients and to investigate the origin of this disease, the head of the Health Ministry told media that evil produces muscle weakness and loss of reflexes and cramps and tingling, so he insisted the entire population of any age who has any of these symptoms, go immediately to the health centers.

At a press conference accompanied by personnel from the Sanitary District No. VII and the Mexican Social Security Institute, said that while some features are similar to Guillain-Barr? syndrome is difficult to diagnose in early stages, so have sent samples to the laboratories of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Atlanta, United States, and next Tuesday will arrive in this city, another group of neurologists and internists to further investigate the possible causes of the outbreak.

Anaya Rivera said that evil can be related to the winter season, with respiratory disease who have had those now suffering from this paralysis is not contagious or fatal and whose recovery may be one month to one year depending on the physical and hygiene of the patient.

Therefore, he called to take preventive action such as when you had the flu outbreak as washing hands, covering your mouth when sneezing or coughing, drinking purified water, and apply the proper shots this season.

He said the recovery of patients is progressive and center or health facility must care for the sick and rehabilitation proportional or non-beneficiaries.

The health secretary, accompanied by the delegate of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, south, Samuel Orrico, and the head of the Sanitary District Number 7, Eva Campos, visited hospital patients in the Rio Blanco Regional Hospital and the IMSS, to make sure their attention is due.

Health sector serves 30 cases of flaccid paralysis

    December 12, 2010

    Figueiras Mayra Hernandez

Orizaba, Veracruz .- A total of 30 cases of flaccid paralysis serve until the hospitals of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social de Orizaba and the White River Regional, said Paul Anaya Rivera, Secretary of Health in the state. He said that this is an outbreak and analyzed in laboratories in the country and Atlanta, U.S.. So far, he said, there is no complete assurance that the case of Guillain Barre syndrome.

Yesterday at noon, accompanied by Anaya Rivera Guerrero Irasema Lagunes, Director of Health Services in Veracruz and Guevara Javier Arenas, director of the Health Care unit met at the premises of the Health District 7 with the delegate of the IMSS in Veracruz South, Samuel Orrico Torres, Pablo Picasso Figueroa, director of the Regional Hospital of Rio Blanco and Eva Campos Solano, head of the Jurisdiction 7.

There, he unveiled last week was in this city personnel Federal Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) to take samples and bring them to their labs, the Indre in the country, and Atlanta, WHO to analyze and confirm or rule out the case of this disease.

He stated that although two patients with this condition died was because they had a previous illness that weakened over his body, making them more sensitive.

About flaccid paralysis explained that this limb starts up and is peripheral because it affects the spinal cord.

Ruled out by the number of registered cases be considered an epidemic, it is rather an outbreak because they are more than two cases with matching situations that make the health sector are working in coordination, as it should be, with the Federation and international agencies.

He added that is not characteristic of Orizaba, is treatable, and is not contagious from person to person. "It has many causes, such as intestinal infections, respiratory diseases are encouraging each to be coming together."

For the situations considered that the time may be more focused on respiratory diseases a problem post-vaccination, and that the cases began to appear in November, "we're thinking that may be of seasonal, cold and can be primarily a respiratory problem. "

Those affected are children from 4 months to adults over 70 years, "is the feature that we are watching," he said.

The cases reported are of municipalities as Ixtaczoquitl?n, Nogales, Carlos A. Carrillo and San Andres Cuitl?huac Tenejapa, ie Orizaba is not like anything else, although it is in this city where he has encountered as many of them in the colonies Rafael Alvarado, Michael German, Barrio Nuevo, Chayotal, Jute, Emiliano Zapata, Rinc?n Grande and El Espinal. Most cases are attending the Social Security Hospital in Orizaba.

"There is a characteristic of a proper place and as we have to study multiple causes and all causes."

He called on the population not to be alarmed to know that the symptoms begin with loss of muscle strength in the limbs, with cramps, "ants" that are slowly rising, "we recommend to be extra hygienic measures that are important to people because as multicausal when sneezing and coughing that has been recommended to do so, to wash their hands frequently, do not drink water that is not fully treated, all that's going to help control " he said.

He stressed that it is not an epidemic is an outbreak, occurring at any age, begins with muscle weakness, abnormalities of muscle tone, and suppression of reflection.

He added that the entire health sector is equipped with the treatments and supportive measures so that we can bring them up. On the cost of said treatment is variable, ranging from 7 thousand to 220 thousand pesos, depending on the circumstances, but all hospitals are equipped to handle such cases.

"We all registered cases, making them up and we can say we have everything perfectly monitored, in response to each and every one of the patients, we know who they are, different age groups, we have 70, over 30 years most of them. "

Asked people with respiratory problems are confined to their homes, seeking to cover the airways with face masks.

The recovery of those with flaccid paralysis, Anaya Rivera said that health institutions are prepared in the state there are 5 centers, rehabilitation and social insurance hospitals have well established any mechanisms to rehabilitate them.

Recovery time is variable, ranging from one month to one year, but already at home. "We already discharged patients who are treated, three are being treated in Social Security, six in the hospital of Rio Blanco, there are patients discharged from hospital, at home with the control measures required and always monitoring care. "

The aftermath gradually disappear because it is a disease that enters the nerves and these are recovering gradually.

After the meeting, Secretary of Health and other authorities conducted a tour of the hospital serving these people, "we will see some patients, to take over all support to families and tell them that here we are and if there were factors of contamination would not be here. This is not contagious, there are treatments and if any of the patients died because I had a basic disease that left him more vulnerable, "he reiterated.

It is noteworthy that the population recommended in this winter season be vaccinated all age groups against influenza, pneumococcus, and rotavirus is an important part of health sector programs, especially extreme hygiene measures ".

    PROGRESS OF THE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL

In inquiring about the progress that records the construction of the new Mental Health Hospital, the official said it is 80 percent. The statement said the governor has Javier Ochoa Duarte to visit the hospitals, "and were in Coatzacoalcos, the Poza Rica, Papantla, soon we will visit the Tuxpan. I can say that they will be finished all the renovations too, and all state hospitals where they stayed a few works.

I can't get this to copy and paste, but the suggestion is that this is viral.

The most common cause of viral AFP is polio, something that hasn't been seen in the Americas in years.

Sporadic cases of Guillain Barre should not feel like "a strange flu".

          Polio should be highly suspect.

Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) will attend an emergent way the outbreak of a disease known as Guillain Barre syndrome, which unofficially it has killed some people and if you have 30 other inhabitants of the central state .

Today the health secretary, Paul Anaya Rivera visited the city and also reported that in coordination with the various health agencies, such as SSA, IMSS and ISSSTE, react to this problem in its most critical stage, generates paralysis death.

Unofficially, it was learned that the disease had its origin in the colony Rafael Alvarado de Orizaba, where mostly adults, began to feel tired legs and a strange flu that put them in serious circumstances.

According to specialists portals disease, Guillain Barre disease is a serious disorder that occurs when the body's defense system (immune system) attacks the nervous system by mistake. This leads to nerve inflammation, which causes muscular weakness.

The syndrome may occur at any age but is most common in people of both sexes between the ages of 30 and 50.

The doctors recommended be addressed as soon as this condition, especially when they are accompanied by the temporary absence of breathing, inability to take a deep breath, difficulty breathing, swallowing, drooling, or fainting, since when it comes down to it, life danger.

This is the background AFP counting system from the WHO.

Mexico has reported 413 total AFP cases year to date, compared with 409 in 2009 and 487 in 2008, and 485 in 2007. So 30 in one city in a few weeks is highly unusual.

No polio cases have been confirmed in Mexico (according to this table), or anywhere else in the Americas, since at least 1996, which is as far back as this table goes.

Hopefully the WHO and CDC investigation will let us know more shortly.

Re: Veracruz- Flaccid Paralysis in the region of Orizaba

I don't know whether they have (or were even able to, as that illness is not found in Mexico for years) tested for polio yet.

                * IMSS Orizaba reported eight cases in November.

You suspect a death from this cause.

Orizaba, Veracruz / Adriana López Martínez .- The Director and representative of the labor sector in the IMSS Orizaba, Cesar Reyes Silva, confirmed that the institute so far has recorded 8 confirmed cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome by the delegate Efren Orrico Torres and apparently there is already one death from the disease.

Silva Reyes mentioned that 6 of these cases serve them in the general hospital of this city and 2 more are coming from the health sector, so even being investigated that is generating it are coming from the colony Rafael Alvarado in this city of Orizaba.

He said that in the presence of this syndrome delegation authorities in conjunction with the Southern Veracruz state government have given the task of investigating the causes that are causing the presence of this evil, it is presumed to be viral but running out the causes that generate it.

For their part, workers in the health jurisdiction number 7, reported that they have captured so far this month 15 suspected cases so are researchers.

It is worth mentioning that when questioned the owner of this dependence Eva Campos Solano, then sealed for only quote that "can not give figures to be certain of the disease, since it is a condition that the annual average recorded in eight cases."

Reported that many of the suspects have been symptoms of flu that is complicated by high temperatures and the presence of tingling in the limbs so that paralyzed one of his limbs go to their medical centers.

For his part in the health center of the city of Orizaba by Gilberto Falcon Lara reported that this is an everyday condition that any doctor can attend and even should be a good diagnosis of it otherwise may be confused as a poliomyelitis.

Lara Falcon rule out that so far this year has been captured in this place some cases, but not well remembered that in recent days reported that the Mexican Social Security Institute had record 4 of these cases.

In turn, nurses and emergency department workers of the IMSS general hospital in the city of Orizaba, indicated that this condition has been captured on a daily basis for at least one title and have been channeled to the proper area for treatment.

It is also estimated that the Rio Blanco Regional Hospital and has detected two cases of this syndrome, since, according to a statement from a parent of elementary school located in the Colonia Barrio Nuevo reduced symptoms of tingling and cold running paralyzed and was channeled to the hospital.

Faced with this situation is expected to delegate the IMSS in this city can give the exact number of these cases are occurring in this city of Orizaba and thereby implement preventive actions avoiding evil alarm among the population as happened with condition of the "Influenza."

It is important to report that this syndrome according to according to the following address: http://www.umm.edu/esp_ency/article/000684.htm, "is a serious disorder that occurs when the body's defense system (system immune) attacks the nervous system by mistake. This leads to nerve inflammation, which causes muscular weakness.

Also the problem is known is that the symptoms can be confused with the common cold, as they arise in addition to flu symptoms, increased body temperature, tingling in the lower and upper extremities and if no timely treatment, death can occur .

It appears the normal AFP rate for Veracruz is 5-8 cases per year.

Most cases of polio are non-paralytic, so clusters of paralytic cases would not appear, thus the (faulty?) assurances that this is not contagious.

Orizaba, Veracruz - Faced with possible cases of Guillain Barr? syndrome in this city, the jurisdiction of Health performed the relevant studies, as potential cases filed this year are the same number to last year.

This was made known by the owner of this dependence, Eva Campos Solano, who advised that "it is alarming or exaggerated." And it pointed out that this is not a new disease, but is presented each year in the area in the state in the country and the world, which is not contagious and occurs in some people who have had a respiratory infection acute or acute diarrheal illness and who have certain genetic characteristics.

He said each year in the jurisdiction are five to eight cases of this disease, which is characterized by bilateral ascending flaccid paralysis and is an autoimmune disease.

He noted that like most diseases can be prevented by hygienic measures such as washing hands before eating and after using the bathroom, make sneeze etiquette (covering the crook of your arm) or use tissue, avoiding shaking hands and kissing, to have complete immunization schedules, taking vitamin A to strengthen the immune system, avoid sudden temperature changes, avoid attending crowded places and especially not self-medicate.

He added that currently the figure is of probable cases, as they have not confirmed, is just "a little more than the number who regularly presents every year, but until we confirm we can not determine the amount.

He commented that the studies reviewed involve spinal brain, with analysis of feces, and if confirmed the disease, treatment is hospital with specialist care internists and neurologists.

He explained that being a demyelinating nerve problem has to do some therapies that are offered at the hospital.

Finally he said that cases are likely to have in the cities of Orizaba, Nogales, Rio Blanco Ixtaczoquitl?n, and urged people to be alert but not alarmed, for there is no reason to fall into psychosis as it is not a disease new nor contagious.

Re: Veracruz- Flaccid Paralysis in the region of Orizaba

From a ProMED post on an outbreak in a different part of the world (that actually was polio).

GBS can have many causes, and it is not always clear what the cause is. Nevertheless, there are several things, including polio, which need to be ruled out, especially in light of the geographical clustering of cases and the mention of flu-like symptoms.

[The brief description of the disease sounds like
an ascending paralysis that is often seen with
Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) -- an autoimmune
disease with an inflammatory demyelination of
peripheral nerves. GBS often follows a
                      respiratory or gastrointestinal illness (notably
following campylobacteriosis -- see ref. 2
below). The illness presents with a subacute
onset of progressive and symmetrical weakness in
the legs and arms, with loss of reflexes. Sensory
abnormalities are seen as well as involvement of
cranial nerves, and paralysis of respiratory
muscles also can occur. In areas with good
supportive care, there is low case fatality rate.

Some notable distinctions between GBS and polio
include the observation that 90 percent of those
with paralytic disease related to poliovirus
                      infection have residual paralysis, whereas
approximately 90 percent of those with GBS have
complete recovery from their paralysis. Another
distinction is that the neurologic disease seen
with poliovirus infection involves pure motor
deficit with sensory sparing, whereas GBS
typically has significant sensory deficits along with the motor impairment.

GBS has also been associated with organophosphate poisoning (see ref. 1 below).

Declared that there was no case in the state until proven influenza A H1N1, but confirms that this vaccine will be one of those to be implemented within the winter season, this after visiting a day Cuitl?huac health.
He noted that at present are in the intensive phase of vaccination. He said the vaccine virus is one of the most necessary for the health of Veracruz

Thank you Sharon, as always. The post is just a ProMED-ESP post; it is not clear that the English language moderators would see it anyway.

As to the suggestion above, a bad batch of vaccine (and not necessarily even flu vaccine) could certainly cause some GBS, but the articles mention that one of the cases is four-months old; infants that young are not normally vaccinated against flu (and the article at http://www.diarionoticias.com.mx/26n...vsindrome.html rules out any connection to a flu vaccine).
