I'm not surprised and it's going to get a lot worse. Here is a news item from the newspaper "Ocho Columnas"

People in Jalisco (and all over Mexico I might add) are convinced the H1N1 virus is a myth, like the Chupacabras which gained popularity during the '95 economic crisis. They believe it was a lie made up by the government to take away people's attention from the economic crisis. Now, why the government would make up something which would cause the Mexican economy to contract even further (3 percentage points more for a 12% drop in the GDP) makes absolutely no sense but this is not about rationality. It's about people's perception.

People here are no longer taking any precautions. They went from sheer terror to total indifference. They are kissing, hugging, coughing in each other's faces, sneezing without even covering their mouths and if you take any precautions you came across as a snob.

So it's only natural to see H1N1 cases on the rise and with the H3N2 and DHF cases on the rise as well this is just a recipe for disaster.

H1N1 cases rise in Jalisco as test backlog diminishes
          Written by GR Staff
          Tuesday, 26 May 2009

There are now 243 confirmed cases of influenza H1N1 in the state of Jalisco, health authorities said Monday evening.

In addition, laboratory tests have identified 426 people with regular seasonal flu, which is also type A influenza.

Only one person has died as a result of H1N1 flu ? a 38-year-old woman from Zapopan.

The backlog of specimens from Jalisco waiting to be tested for H1N1 at the federal Diagnostics and Epidemiology laboratory (INDRE) in Mexico City is decreasing, authorities said. While it may appear that the number of cases in the state has increased rapidly in recent days, it should be remembered that many date back two or three weeks because of the backlog. The majority of those infected have recovered and have returned to their normal routines.

State Governor Emilio Gonzalez said that a new laboratory costing 7.2 million pesos that will be able to carry out the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) evaluation that can determine the presence of H1N1 will be ready in a week?s time. Nonetheless, health authorities revealed this week that specimens that test positive for H1N1 at the new lab will also be sent to Indre for final confirmation.

Statistics show that young people under the age of 21 seem to be most at risk of becoming infected with H1N1.

On May 26 the World Health Organization said that 46 countries have officially reported 12,954 cases of H1N1 infection, including 92 deaths. The United States led the list with 6,764 cases and 10 deaths. Mexico reported 4,174 cases and 80 deaths, while Canada?s total was 921 cases and one death

Guadalajara .- The Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (Indre) denied on Wednesday that the death of a man of 34 years, residing in Tlaquepaque, have been influenza A-H1N1. In this case, it was confirmed that the three deaths that prompted the governor Emilio Gonzalez to extend the closing weeks of a school and turns of entertainment throughout the state were not caused by new virus.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Health Jalisco (SSJ) reported that "recent report" near the end of a news release, which notes that INDRE "denied that the death of a resident of Tlaquepaque is a result of influenza virus human, which was the second death of the analysis was sought from the beginning of the alert. "

In effect, this young adult was the second of three deaths in cascade between 21:00 pm on May 7 and the morning of May 8 and whose samples were sent to INDRE.

That day, at a press conference, Gonzalez Marquez ordered the temporary closure of all the twists and entertainment centers reunion from 8 to May 18. It also postponed the return to classes at all educational levels.

He reported three deaths: a woman of 24 years originally from Acatlan, who presented all the symptoms of human influenza and went to the hospital four days later, a baby of eleven months, died on May 7, as well as a man of 37 years, who entered the hospital with five days of evolution of the disease, also died on May 7.

"Samples of these three deaths are being sent to the National Institute of Epidemiological Reference, therefore we have no laboratory confirmation of the cause of his death. However, clinical data, we suggest that the probable cause of three deaths is affected by influenza virus type A-H1N1, "said the state (Public, May 9, 2009).

As a preventive action, the governor ordered the temporary closure of all places of entertainment or meeting centers in the state. After lifting the closure on Wednesday to 13 municipalities without probable cases "of influenza. On Thursday 14, the rest of the state. The return to school was postponed May 18, not 11 days as in the rest of the country (except in extraordinary four states).

This prompted a visit by the federal Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova Villalobos, the May 9, who promised the results of these three deaths in 48 hours, then gave "priority" to the analysis of deaths.

The reality was different. It took 600 hours (25 days) to publicize the three results. Two weeks ago was ruled out of the death of the patient-Acatlan died in the epidemic of influenza type A or the seasonality and days after it was learned that also was ruled out by the A-H1N1 baby of eleven months, almost by chance and without the SSJ would focus on that.

To date, there have been 16 deaths "suspicious." Only one was confirmed positive for H1N1 and A-occurred on May 12, two were influenza A and nine seasonal or discarded by these viruses. Are pending the results of four deaths to confirm or exclude that have been a result of the new virus.

                          Square numbers

In Jalisco and square the numbers of cases of influenza A-H1N1. Reported that the SSJ INDRE acknowledged the existence of four cases on its list of duplicate infections confirmed and corrected the error. But it also included four new cases, so the figure will not move: there are 333 affected in the state, which remains in third place national, admitted the chief of the Epidemiology of SSJ, Lucia Salazar Montes.

Furthermore, the Duplicate INDRE corrected eight cases of influenza A or seasonal, so this figure is 554 in the affected state.

This is the second time they are corrected figures on the influenza A-H1N1. When the 231 cases reported INDRE in Jalisco, the SSJ said they were 229. Then it was explained that two samples were repeated, then took a pair of brothers, 22 and April 24. A communique reported the post adjustment.

Today, the backlog of information prevails. Sends the results to date from Jalisco INDRE to ten days back. "There continues transmission [new cases ...] and the information generated from confirmed cases remains behind. The latest information is that we would know the current status of [the epidemic], "said Salazar Montes.

Vaccine does not come to school

The seasonal influenza vaccine does not apply to schools. The Health Ministry said that is administered at vaccination posts located in health centers in 48 priority municipalities, including the metropolitan-area for children and adolescents between five and 19 years, confirmed the head of Preventive Medicine, Lomeli Ramiro Reyes. He assured that the response of the population has been very good and hoped that it will apply before 50 thousand biological June 30. Guadalajara, 5 Jun (Notimex) .- The cumulative number of human cases of influenza in the state is 345, after the Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (Indre) in its latest report, confirmed two new patients.

The Director of Public Health of the Ministry of Health Jalisco (SSJ), Elizabeth Ulloa Robles, said that if there is a duplicate of which was sent to the application for rectification INDRE.

He reported that the report was received four reports of influenza A, so the figure rose to 561 in Jalisco.

He stated that in total 415 thousand were two samples tested, 509 thousand and were negative for both forms of the disease, noting that the two new reports of human influenza correspond to the municipality of Guadalajara.

Detailed in the report that no deaths were reported, which continues to Jalisco with a death that is attributable to human influenza virus.

He recalled that the disease is present in 31 municipalities of the state, falling very sharply in the metropolitan area, which insisted that the SSJ has not lifted the health warning on this disease.

It continues the implementation of the strengthening of the seasonal influenza vaccines in all health centers, in response to the unusual behavior of this disease, which usually occur in winter in children and older adults.

JALISCO - Jalisco heath authorities will administer 50,000 influenza ?booster? vaccinations to children aged from six to 19.

The vaccines will provide protection against seasonal influenza A but not the newer H1N1 strain, which has swept across Mexico since mid April, infecting thousands and killing more than 100.

Starting June 13, vaccinations will be given to primary and secondary school children in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara and 44 other municipalities.

A vaccine for the H1N1 strain is in development but is not expected to become available until October or November, and then only for around 10 to 15 percent of the population.

More than 500 people have been hospitalized in Jalisco since mid April suffering from flu-like symptoms ? a significantly higher number than normal.

On Thursday, June 4, state health officials said specimens from 2,405 people have been analyzed at the federal lab in Mexico City, of which 557 had tested positive for regular influenza A and 342 for H1N1. Only one person, a 38-year-old woman from Zapopan, is confirmed having died after becoming infected with the new virus.

Only Mexico City and the state of San Luis Potosi have registered more H1N1 cases than Jalisco.

Of those infected, 164 were from Guadalajara and 61 from Zapopan. Puerto Vallarta has seven confirmed cases of H1N1, Jocotepec two and Chapala one.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) is considering raising its pandemic alert level to phase 6. This is because ?some countries are moving from isolated to sustained community spread,? Keiji Fukuda, WHO?s assistant director general, said this week.

Although the highest phase on the WHO?s pandemic alert system, phase six (global pandemic) does not reflect the severity of the disease, but how widespread it is.

As countries like Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom and Spain contemplate rising numbers of H1N1 infections, an increasing number of states in Mexico are starting to wind down their emergency alert levels.

While cases continue to be confirmed in large numbers in the United States and Canada, the disease seem to be losing some of its potency in Mexico.

The University of Guadalajara said Monday it would no longer be assessing its students for flu-like symptoms as they turned up for classes.

Jalisco health officials, however, said this week that the alert would remain in place as ?potential? new cases are still being reported, although the symptoms are generally mild and anti-viral treatment has a quick and positive effect on H1N1.
