Confirms death of 5 infants in the IMSS-Tapachula
Angeles Mariscal l The state health secretary, James Gomez Montes, confirmed the deaths of five infants in the hospital of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Tapachula, allegedly as a result of a bacterium that has not yet been identified. The hospital was isolated for disinfection.
The official said the deaths occurred this week in federal hospital. At the time an infant but had also been infected by the bacteria already recovered and was discharged, but two more remain hospitalized children.
"The children who died were premature, had a low weight and were vulnerable to any infection. For the symptoms they presented, that was sudden fever and weight loss, which was presumed to result from infection by bacteria, "said James Montes, who added that the death was the influenza virus.
"We are currently doing studies to identify the bacteria they made, and will take 72 hours the results. For now you can consider that the situation is under control, and the hospital has been disinfected.
For its part the state delegate IMSS Orrico Samuel Torres, said a group of specialists of this institution began a series of studies and procedures to isolate the bacteria that affect infants, who are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Hospital 0l General Zone.
It is recalled that between January and February 2003, at least 33 newborn babies died in Comitan General Hospital, located on the border with Guatemala, as a result of a bacterium.
