Gels and masks, symbols of the crisis

Prices and increased production of antibacterial and insulation ... For the first outbreak of influenza A H1N1 in Mexico City, recognized by local authorities during the third week of April 2009 (it was not until the 24th that the emerging plan was decreed in the capital), some businesses accumulated large economic losses, but others saw their income flourish as only a generalized uncertainty could result in: business, selling new masks and hand sanitizer.
A year ago, the city's pharmacies purchased the mask for 35/150 pesos and, after the contingency, the package with 50 pieces cost only 120 pesos.
For the public, the price rose 50 cents or one dollar per piece, five dollars, while producers had increased their production of up to 600%, as narrated Jorge Medina, who a year ago saw an opportunity in the epidemic perfect for placing fabric mask.
"There were those who even monopolized the production of masks, is expected to rise the price a little, and drew the market," recalls George.
However, despite the success of the masks, for employers related to the pharmaceutical market, the antibacterial gel was the most popular product of the influenza virus H1N1, since before the health crisis last year, it had very low demand, including some local businesses report having had at most one pair in existence.
However, after the contingency this product became one of the most requested, so that their prices also increased: 250 ml bottle from 10 to 25 pesos, the average price is maintained to date in the capital .
This caused many people start home preparation of antibacterial gel, as well as some technical schools, which gave evidence that consumption patterns were also affected by the health crisis.
Another product that was during the health emergency demand were the plastic gloves, which the pair weighing cost as much as 15 pesos. Pharmacy managers noted that, currently, all these products, the demand is keeping the antibacterial gel.
