Cases of influenza increase 400% and double deaths in 2018-2019

The Ministry of Health rejected that there is a situation of serious epidemiological risk for influenza in the country, despite the increase in the number of cases and deaths from this disease. He reported that the spread of viral infection in the 2018-2019 season is slower than in previous periods, although the number of cases increased by up to 400 percent and more than double the number of deaths due to this condition. In a press conference, the Undersecretary of Prevention and Promotion of Health of the federal government, Hugo L?pez Gatell, explained that the spread of the disease started this period before its time, that is, in mid-September.

Lopez Gatell said that up to this week of the current season 2018-2019 have been presented thousand 948 cases and 143 deaths.

There are already 63 deaths due to influenza

The current influenza season records 63 deaths from the disease, the second highest since 2012, according to records from the epidemiological authorities. In addition, the lethality of this disease went from 1.6 to 6.6 percent when comparing last season with the current one, because 80 percent of the cases correspond to strain A H1N1, the most aggressive. However, the Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo L?pez-Gatell, indicated that the situation is within the expected. And stressed that the increase in lethality does not imply an emergency, since the behavior of the virus is similar to that presented in other seasons, where this strain predominated. The virus, he explained, affects the young adult more than children and older adults, who are more affected by the strains that prevailed last season.
