As the debate over health care reform continues in the U.S., Mexico City is offering free medical insurance to anyone who visits through the end of 2009.
Anyone who looks at Mexico's bustling national capital would find it hard to believe that normal life almost came to a standstill during the H1N1 flu outbreak.
However, authorities shut down all non-essential businesses this past spring, including restaurants, causing tourists to flee.
Now, in an effort to lure them back, the city is offering them free health insurance, which covers things like the flu, any accident, dental, and some operations.
The company handling the claims will be watching for any cases that possibly involve fraud, however, and just like back home, the policy for travelers will not cover pre-existing conditions.
Mexico City is hoping this offer of free insurance for travelers will help the capital's tourism industry recover.
