Island records its eighth H1N1 case

PHILIPSBURG--A resident of the French side has been identified as the island?s eighth confirmed case affected by the Influenza A (H1N1) virus.

?The person in question has been isolated and has been treated with anti-viral medication Tamiflu. Family members of the person are being closely monitored by French health authorities,? the Government Information Service (GIS) on the Dutch side reported Thursday evening.

GIS said samples had been taken on July 3 and the Preventive Health Department (PHD) had been informed on July 7 about the confirmed results.

?The person had travelled to New York around June 28/29. On their return, the person had displayed flu-like symptoms and contacted their family physician on the Dutch side. Two other persons not related to the aforementioned case were tested on July 2. Their results came back negative for H1N1. They left the island on July 3. They had travelled from Miami to the island,? GIS explained.

It also disclosed that a sample had been taken on July 6 from a family member of the seventh confirmed case who was vacationing on the island, but the results are still pending.

Meanwhile, according to GIS, the other seven confirmed cases have all fully recovered.

According to World health Organisation (WHO) officials, the severity of the disease at this point in time remains relatively mild.

However, persons with any flu-like-illness should remain at home and contact their family physicians immediately. They should not engage in any community activities such as working, shopping or participating in any mass/social activities. This will limit the risk of community spread.
