Guantanamo .- The epidemiological situation in Cuba today has two aspects of importance: the country is experiencing an outbreak of Influenza A H1N1 virus and persistent high levels of infestation of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, vectors of dengue, in 20 municipalities, including all of Havana and Santiago de Cuba.

Is a complex scenario that is demanding enormous efforts of the Government and the Ministry of Public Health to prevent these events become problems that dramatically affect the overall good of the Cuban population, according to Dr. Luis Estruch said Ranca?o.

During a recent visit to the eastern city of Guantanamo, the vice minister of the area of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology answered several questions on the subject.

What is the status of influenza A virus H1N1?

We have more than 10 weeks of increased cases of acute respiratory diseases in the country.

Despite the experience of the national health system in confronting the disease and early detection of cases through daily research on the most sensitive, we recommend that before the symptoms of a blue box or influenza people come immediately to the nearest health facilities to dictate medical conduct to follow and to indicate appropriate treatment.

Note that just vaccinate more than 1.1 million people selected because of their greater vulnerability during the campaign against Influenza A Virus H1N1, which gives us some strength to deal with this outbreak.

We also say that although the current epidemic is far smaller than the one we had in October last year, we must continue to monitor and control their behavior.

Cuba has a national health system very strong, accessible and free for all people, capable of dealing with this pandemic, but it is essential that every citizen internalize the risk to life that means the disease and seek immediate medical before the occurrence of any of the symptoms of flu.

In terms of Aedes aegypti, is held in several major cities.

We have 22 municipalities, of the 169 which has the nation, which are a concern for the top leadership of the Government and the Ministry of Health.

Are all of the City of Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Camaguey, Santa Clara, Guant?namo, Bejucal, Mariel and Bauta.

Here we have concentrated 90 percent of outbreaks of mosquito in the country and to the extent that you have Aedes aegypti, have potential dengue transmission.

We have health cooperation agreements in 70 countries, including several in the region of the Americas, currently affected by an epidemic of dengue very intense, so our partners into the country with dengue, as we did in Santiago Cuba and Guantanamo, where there had been cases of transmission of the disease.

We are conducting a joint work with the authorities, State agencies and mass organizations in those territories to further reduce rates of infection, because despite the continuing drought in most parts of the country, are experiencing some rain in municipalities where is an intensive fight against the mosquito.

The Revolution makes every effort to be gradually improving the supply of running water to the population and waste collection and disposal in the sanitary conditions which constitute a danger of epidemic transmission.

Are there changes in the context of the fight against Aedes aegypti in Guantanamo?

Today we are pleased to confirm that completed the intensive phase of the vector control and anti-epidemic in the town of Guant?namo.

We have more than 60 days without risk of vector transmission and the rate fell to 0.04 percent, lower at 0.05 we use it as security. It is the result of more than five months of hard work.

The territory, essentially the city is in a phase of consolidation that result, under the leadership of the Party and the Government, with the participation of regional health institutions, the system of vector control, mass organizations, entities state and the general population.

How to get to the stage of sustainability?

Do not neglect any aspect of the campaign against the mosquito. Any neglect we can shoot again the rate of infestation.

Keeping this short is a key indicator to prevent the establishment of a chain of transmission of dengue.

We are making an incredible effort, allocating substantial human, financial and material that dengue does not become a health issue for our country, situated in a region where the disease is endemic in only three countries: Chile, Uruguay and Cuba
