Turks and Caicos bans poultry imports from Dominican Republic

GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands: Following reports of an outbreak of low-pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza ?bird flu? virus at live-bird market sites in the Dominican Republic, the Ministry of Health and Human Services in the Turks and Caicos Islands has imposed a ban on the importation of poultry and poultry products from the Dominican Republic with immediate effect.

Animal health officials in the Dominican Republic reported the outbreak at live-bird market sites in the city of Santo Domingo and the village of La Otra Banda. These findings were confirmed by the US Department of Agriculture?s National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Iowa.

The H5N2 strain of the bird flu virus does not pose any threat to humans, but it may cause outbreak of the bird flu among birds and poultry stock in the Turks and Caicos, if infected birds are imported.
