Trinidad Tobago Moves Contra Bird Flu

Port of Spain, Jan 10 (Prensa Latina) Trinidad and Tobago intensified measures Thursday to avoid a possible outbreak of avian flu and other diseases with economic impact for the national poultry industry, announced Trinitarian Agriculture Minister Arnold Piggot.

Piggot informed of the construction and equipping of a laboratory to detect the H5N2 virus, recently discovered in the Dominican Republic.

He added that the government will reinforce regulations for commercial operations in the cattle and poultry sectors in the country.

Piggot's made the statements yesterday at the opening of a workshop to evaluate the risks of avian flu, emphasizing a plan to fight the disease.

The three-day forum is developed in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) among other organizations, and is to improve detection systems, rapid responses and containment of the virus in the Caribbean.

Avian flu is a highly infectious respiratory disease provoking tiredness, fever, shivering, cough and body pain.

According to data provided by the World Health Organization 348 cases of infected people with the H5N1 virus have been reported in the world since 2003; of them, 216 died in 14 countries, mostly in Asia.
