MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico has detected the severe H5N1 strain of avian influenza at a 60,000-bird commercial farm in Nuevo Leon state on the border with the United States, the government said on Sunday.

The discovery at the chicken farm comes just over a week after Mexico reported its first-ever case of H5N1 avian influenza, or bird flu, to the Paris-based World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

The disease was detected when Mexico's agri-food health service tested samples from a farm in Montemorelos, Nuevo Leon, after a producer there raised concerns, Mexico's agricultural ministry said in a statement...

Outbreak of AH5N1 avian flu detected in Yucatan farm
By Yucatan Times on November 23, 2022

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Agriculture) of the federal government confirmed the arrival of AH5N1 avian flu in Yucatan, as it was recently detected in a farm in the state.

Through an official statement, the federal agency announced that so far this virus has been detected in commercial farms in states such as Sonora, Jalisco, Nuevo Leon and more recently in Yucatan, as well as in three backyard farms in Chiapas, Chihuahua and the State of Mexico.

In this regard, Agriculture announced that since the first record of AH5N1 avian flu in Mexico, this virus has spread in about 1,400,000 affected birds, which represents 0.07 percent of the national flock.

However, the agency headed by Víctor Villalobos Arámbula stressed that the current records do not pose “any risk” to the country’s egg and chicken supply...

Avian influenza AH5N1 has affected more than three million 933 thousand birds in Mexico
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development delivered 41 million 351 thousand doses against avian influenza A/H5N1 for laying birds
        Sunday, 04.12.2022 / 18:07 Today

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) A/H5N1 has affected three million 933 thousand 499 birds, most of them laying eggs, which means 0.19 percent of the national inventory in 17 commercial poultry production units from eight entities in the country: six in Jalisco, another six in Yucatán, four in Sonora and one in Nuevo León.

In addition, four backyard farms located in Chiapas, Chihuahua, Mexico State and Oaxaca were affected.

For this reason, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development delivered 41 million 351 thousand doses against avian influenza A/H5N1 for laying birds, progenitors and breeders in Jalisco, Yucatán, Coahuila, Sonora, Durango, Nayarit and Nuevo León.

In Jalisco, an entity in which 54 percent of the national total of eggs and 11.4 of the total poultry meat are produced, 34 million 167 thousand doses of vaccine have been authorized and in Yucatan, 4.4 million.

The rest of the biologicals began to be applied in Coahuila, Sonora, Durango, Nayarit and Nuevo León, 41 million 351 thousand doses of vaccines from three laboratories, based on the availability of the biologicals and the determination of estimated risk.

As of November 2022, 6,719 HPAI A/H5N1 outbreaks have been reported in 61 countries. In Europe there are 37 million slaughtered birds, in America 54, in Asia 10 and in Africa 8.8 million.

In recent weeks, the veterinary services of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela have reported the presence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) A/H5N1.

The vaccination strategy in Mexico began 10 days ago in commercial production units, in areas of high animal health risk and in farms that raise parent and reproductive hens, because they are essential to preserve the production of chicken meat and eggs. for the national supply.

The Agriculture agency stressed that the minimum biosecurity measures in the poultry production units (UPA) continue to be strengthened and to date 2,491 farms have been certified by Senasica and 109 more are in process.

Likewise, the Agriculture officials explained that Senasica has accredited 453 authorized responsible veterinarians (MVRA) specialists in birds, most of them in Jalisco, with 73, Puebla, 39, Veracruz, 37, and Querétaro, 34.

So far in Mexico, Senasica reminded the attendees that the internal quarantine in the state of Nuevo León was lifted, a measure that prevails in Jalisco, Sonora and Yucatán, for which it invited the members of the production chain not to move products poultry that have not been certified by the technicians of the institution, after demonstrating the absence of influenza in their farms.

H5N1 avian influenza viruses first appeared in southern China in 1996. These viruses caused large-scale outbreaks in poultry in Hong Kong in 1997, resulting in 18 human infections.

The 1997 bird outbreak was controlled, but H5N1 avian influenza viruses were not eradicated in the avians.

The number of farms infected with avian flu in Yucatan increased by 50%
By Yucatan Times on December 30, 2022

The number of poultry production units (UPA) affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) AH5N1 in Yucatan increased by 50 percent, revealed the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), stating that there are now nine affected farms.

It also informed that the number of vaccines against HPAI has doubled, so that more than 10 million doses will be applied to the same number of food birds in the state.

As of last Friday 16, Sader stated that this pathology was under control in the State, which affected 312,756 birds in six egg production units distributed in Umán and Timucuy, for which reason the National Animal Health Emergency Operation was extended for six months.

In addition, 100 percent of the birds were eliminated in the state, which translates into the slaughter of more than 100,000 chickens, to prevent the spread of the disease. At the same time, 4.4 million biologicals were applied to the birds of the various farms established in the state.

Today, the federal agency indicated that there are already nine affected units in Yucatan, which is why the number of antidotes was increased.

As part of the actions to control and eradicate HPAI, which was detected in Mexico last October, Sader’s veterinary medical personnel have so far sampled 99,648 birds in poultry production units (UPA), backyard farms and wetlands...
