New case of avian influenza detected, now in Tijuana's Morelos Park
    By Julieta Aragón
    December 28, 2024

The Ministry of Health detected a probable case of H5N1 avian influenza in a bird in Morelos Park, so it decided to partially close the lake in that public space for fifteen days.

A week earlier, on December 20, 2024, the agency headed by Adrián Medina Amarillas in conjunction with the National Service for Health, Safety and Food Quality (Senasica) closed the lake in Parque de la Amistad, after detecting three cases of the disease.

Medina Amarillas noted that medical units in the State are reinforcing their training on epidemiological surveillance, detection and management of cases of avian influenza, and that so far there are no cases of avian flu in humans.

He called on the population to maintain basic preventive measures against any viral disease such as constant hand washing, keeping a safe distance from people who have respiratory symptoms, avoiding contact with sick or dead birds, as well as notifying the authorities in case of suspected outbreaks of this type of avian influenza.

He also invited people who visit or work in spaces with animals to maintain hygiene and prevention measures...

...According to the weekly report on the epidemiological situation of COVID-19, influenza and respiratory viruses in Mexico for Week 51 (December 27, 2024), Baja California accumulated 187 positive cases of COVID-19, with 20 deaths.

Meanwhile, 481 cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) have been registered. Of these, 42 cases have tested positive for influenza, with no deaths recorded in the state, according to the report from the federal Ministry of Health.

Two ducks die from bird flu in Tijuana; “nothing to be alarmed about,” say authorities.
      By Ernesto Eslava
      December 30, 2024

The birds that live in Parque Morelos and Parque de la Amistad in the city of Tijuana are being reviewed after three specimens tested positive for bird flu on December 20 and 27, 2024. The authorities dismiss the situation as serious, because although it is transmissible to humans, the bird areas were partially closed to reduce direct contact.

The green areas away from the lakes in both Tijuana parks remain open, so visitors and workers in the area are advised to be careful with bird droppings and avoid direct contact and thus reduce the chances of contagion.

“The birds were not sick before, nor are the birds poorly fed or have a previous illness. This is exclusively an influenza that is H5N1, typical of birds, which although it is highly pathogenic and can be transmitted in birds, it is also difficult. It is not typical of animals, or mammals, they can also be infected, humans could also be infected, but it is low risk. As this is a disease of migratory birds, it would be difficult for the same to happen in other parks because the Parque de la Amistad is characteristic of housing migratory birds and the Morelos park because of its proximity,” explained Azael Mercedes Fuentes Camarena, director of the Municipal System of Theme Parks of Tijuana (Simpatt).

Simpatt lacks a demographic of duck specimens that inhabit the artificial lakes of both partially closed parks. What they have identified is that there are two species, the “coot”, Fulica atra and the Pekinese duck, the American Pekin, which are the large white ones that migrate...

Bird flu outbreak confirmed in geese in Laguna Fierro
Authorities warn citizens not to approach the body of water because the disease is transmissible to humans
          Víctor Hugo Valdovinos
          Thursday 23 Jan 2025, 08:00

Nuevo Casas Grandes.- Health and Municipal authorities confirmed that the cause of mass death of migratory birds in Laguna Fierro is due to bird flu, so the population is warned not to approach this body of water because the virus is highly contagious to humans and can even be fatal.

It was last month when it was detected that dead birds were frequently appearing on the shore in Laguna Fierro, mostly of the so-called Canadian geese, which migrate every year to Nuevo Casas Grandes and other bodies of water in the region.

The number of deaths among these birds began to worry the authorities of the Fifth Health Jurisdiction, who removed some of these birds to carry out laboratory sampling and determine if it was a pathogen or even poisoning.
