Ministry of Health says the population can eat chicken meat and eggs
As a control measure, the authorities initiate the stamping out of the entire population of hens susceptible to the virus. In addition, cleaning and disinfection will be carried out thoroughly, after depopulation .
Santo Domingo.- Subject to the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) the Ministry of Health of the Dominican Republic said Sunday that the population can continue consuming chicken meat and chicken eggs. Remember, also, that it is always the duty of citizens to cook food well.
In their reports, the international health authority, a unit of the United Nations (UN), states that "there is no data that indicates that the avian flu virus and other influenza viruses can affect people.
The Ministry of Health statement came after confirming the appearance of an outbreak of avian influenza virus subtype H5N2 in a laying hen farm located in the municipality of Cayetano Germos?n Espaillat province. This virus is classified as low capacity to produce disease in humans.
"The challenge for health authorities and producers is to maintain control of the avian disease with the application of specific prevention measures in people who are directly linked to raising birds," says the Ministry of Health.
The suspected outbreak of influenza was detected on the 9th by the Avian Disease Division of the General Livestock Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and immediately notified to the National Liaison Center of the Dominican Republic, in correct application of the Health Regulations. International (RSI).
The statement from the Ministry of Health states that "the Central Veterinary Laboratory identified the presence of an untyped influenza virus in the samples of birds.
Subsequently, the National Laboratory of Veterinary Services (NVSL) of the United States confirmed that it is the subtype H5N2, which is considered to have a low capacity to produce disease in humans. "
Response from the authorities
Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Epidemiology (DIGEPI) of the Ministry of Health explained that "in the active search for human cases, 15 people with mild respiratory symptoms were identified, which were negative in the laboratory tests conducted by the Dr. Defill? National Laboratory. to influenza virus, ".
However, despite considering the H5N2 influenza virus identified in birds at low risk to humans, a multidisciplinary rapid response team (RRA) composed of professionals from the Ministries of Agriculture and Health is proceeding with the established protocol.
The Directorate General of Livestock, meanwhile, reported that "among the measures applied include intensified surveillance and sanitary control in the focal area (1 km) and surveillance in the perifocal area (3-5 km) which includes the application of surveys, sampling and epidemiological tracing. "
He adds that the process of elimination of the eggs kept under quarantine was also initiated and the sanitary sacrifice of the entire population of hens susceptible to the virus was initiated. In addition, cleaning and disinfection will be carried out thoroughly, after depopulation; and for three (3) months, the poultry farms around the focus (about 3km) will be intensified.
