    • Update of the event as of 1st May 2014:
      • An H5N8 virus was isolated.
        • H5 is 98.2% similar to A/mallard/California/1435/2013 (H5N5) based on sequence from the complete hemagglutinin gene.
        • N8 is 95.7% similar to A/Mallard/Interior Alaska/6MP0160AR1/2006 (H3N8) based on sequence from the complete neuraminidase gene.
        • Chicken pathogenicity testing is compatible with low pathogenic avian influenza virus.

      • Flock Plans? were completed for the index premises and other at risk premises and include testing schemes, biosecurity protocols, and product movement guidelines.
      • Follow-up surveillance and testing for influenza A virus (IAV) continues on the two (2) epidemiologically associated farms?results are pending.
        • In addition, a surveillance and outreach plan is being implemented within a 10 km Control Area.
        • The joint United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) epidemiological investigation and response to the event are continuing.

    • Note by the OIE Animal Health Information Department:
      • H5 and H7 avian influenza in its low pathogenic form in poultry is a notifiable disease as per Chapter 10.4. on avian influenza of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code (2013).
