Sargassum: a first case of acute contamination observed at the CHUM

This Friday, seven workers who collected sargassum in Tartane were inconvenienced by brown algae. For the first time since 2018, a patient has been confirmed with acute contamination.

Strangely, this is the first time since the creation of the Sargassum consultation in April 2018 that doctors from the Martinique University Hospital have noted a case of acute contamination after prolonged exposure to Sargassum. “In 2018, 2019, we received calls from people explaining that they had the symptoms but we had never observed it directly”, describes Professor Dabor Résière, resuscitator-toxicologist at the CHUM.

Ce vendredi, sept travailleurs qui ramassaient des sargasses à Tartane ont été incommodés par les algues brunes. Pour la première fois depuis 2018, une patiente a été confirmée avec une contamination aiguë.
