Dominican Republic registers more than 100,000 cases of coronavirus
Coronavirus By EFE Tuesday, September 8, 2020

EL NUEVO DIARIO, SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Republic reached the mark of 100,131 coronavirus infections this Tuesday, with a total of 1,889 deaths, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

In the last 24 hours, 25 new deaths and 233 additional COVID-19 infections were reported, a figure lower than in recent days, which is partly explained by a decrease in the number of new PCR tests processed (2,493).

The bulletin indicates that the occupancy rate for hospital beds for COVID-19 stands at 27%; that of intensive care beds (ICU), in 44%; and that of fans, in 33%.

At the end of July, the hospital system came under pressure from a sharp increase in patient admissions, but since then the authorities have worked to expand the number of beds available for COVID-19 patients.

The mortality rate per million inhabitants stands at 180.79, a figure that exceeds the world average (113.63), but which is much lower than the average for the American continent (469.14).

The country has been in a state of emergency since July 20 and a day later the curfew has been in force throughout the country, which varies its schedule in different districts depending on the level of incidence of the virus.

Likewise, the mandatory use of a mask in public places is maintained and the Government urges the population to maintain measures of physical distancing.

Errata: Bulletin No. 175 of the Ministry of Public Health reported today two different numbers of deaths, with accumulated that validate both figures.

In the first block they indicate 23 daily deaths, while in the newspaper they add 12, which generated confusion among journalists who handle the data daily.

The bulletin 175 of the Ministry of Public Health reported 12 deaths, and 779 infections, in addition, 4,259 tests were performed for the first time and 1,456 tests were carried out on patients who are followed up.

During the last weeks a positivity of 27.17% and the fatality rate is 1.89%.

According to bulletin 175, when analyzing data from the surveillance of COVID-19, according to the onset date of symptoms of sick people and the weekly behavior of the care of febrile diseases and other related events indicate that between the weeks 23 and 31 (May 31 to August 1) had its highest incidence, the first wave of the current epidemic. In that period, the percentage of positive samples ranged between 39% and 21%, reaching its maximum value in week 26 (June 21 to 27), and then gradually decreasing, to values between 19% to 15% during weeks 33 and 36 (August 9 to September 5). To date, 100,937 infected people (symptomatic and asymptomatic) have been identified by the laboratory, which is equivalent to 1% of the Dominican population, with a considerable proportion of the population remaining susceptible. So it is necessary to maintain preventive measures, use of masks, physical distancing and hand washing.

Regarding fatality, in the last 24 hours, 12 deaths were reported, none of them occurred on September 9. These deaths occurred between July 3 and September 7. The distribution of deaths reported by date of occurrence shows a progressive decrease (Figure No. 2). However, the weekly monitoring of deaths from all causes reflects an excess of mortality that has been maintained since week 20 (10 to 16 May). Therefore, to reduce the underreporting of deaths from COVID-19 (probable and confirmed), public and private health centers are reiterated to urgently proceed with the notification of deaths that have not been reported

      Accumulated
