Dominican Republic with five cases of coronavirus, promotes new measures for disease control

The Dominican Republic reported over the weekend that three of its citizens recently arrived from Italy tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus, thereby raising the confirmed cases of the disease in the country to five so far.

The Minister of Public Health, Rafael S?nchez C?rdenas, said they have verified the existence of three new cases of coronavirus in the country, which correspond to a Dominican woman living in Italy who arrived on vacation, a young woman of 29 who was also in Milan, and a 12-year-old boy from a family who was in Italy and has arrived and tested positive.

The minister said that those affected with the disease entered the country without symptoms and several days later presented influenza, forcing the authorities to start the isolation process as established by the protocol to prevent the spread of the virus.

S?nchez C?rdenas said the 29-year-old woman is admitted to the Ram?n de Lara military hospital, in the Santo Domingo province, while the other woman escaped from a health center in the Duarte province (northeast), but was located in the nearby municipality of Villa Riva, where she lives alone.

Regarding the students who were in Wuhan, S?nchez C?rdenas said that when they arrived in the country they were subjected to observation and handed over to their relatives, because they were quarantined in Ukraine, negative for the virus.

The first two confirmed cases of the disease in the country correspond to an Italian and a Canadian who entered the country on February 22 and are staying in hotels in the tourist enclave of Bayahibe in the province of La Altagracia.

The health authorities have assured that both patients are in stable conditions at the Ram?n de Lara hospital, located in the facilities of the San Isidro Air Base of the Dominican Republic Air Force.

Thus, the Ministry of Public Health of the country instructs the implementation of the following measures to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 in the workplace such as being attentive and disseminating information on the evolution of the disease worldwide and recommendations issued by the Ministry of Health and PAHO / WHO.

Workplace cleaning is also required to be promoted, including surfaces (tables, desks, locks) and objects (phones, keyboards), cleaning and disinfecting them regularly and handwashing with your employees, contractors and customers.

The Ministry also calls for the avoidance of foreign travel by employees who are in the high-risk group (elderly people and those with diabetes, hypertension, coronary and pulmonary diseases)
It is indicated that a contingency plan be developed for the continuity of its operations in case of community transmission of COVID-19.

A Canadian tourist has the second confirmed case of the new coronavirus in the Dominican Republic, the public health ministry said Thursday.

The 70-year-old woman arrived in the Caribbean country on Feb. 25 with her husband, who is not showing symptoms of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus that first appeared in China late last year.

The couple has been transferred from their hotel in Bayahibe, in the eastern part of the country, to a hospital isolation center in the capital Santo Domingo.

First case of coronavirus recorded in DR

The Ministry of Public Health confirmed the first case of coronavirus imported (COVID-19) in the Dominican Republic.

Minister Rafael S?nchez C?rdenas reported that it is an Italian citizen who arrived in the country without symptoms of the virus.

The information was offered through a press conference in which other health authorities of the country and the Emergency Operations Service (COE) participate.

Public Health asks the population to take the official information offered by that entity and not be alarmed by the unofficial texts disseminated through social networks.

The confirmed Italian is in the Ram?n de Lara military hospital, located in San Isidro. The director of the hospital said that the patient arrived at dawn on February 29.
