Monkeypox in Mexico: no recorded cases of the lethal clade 1b variant
As of the second week of August, 53 cases of Mpox clade II have been recorded in Mexico, with the majority of those affected being men.

MEXICO.- The Ministry of Health of Mexico recently reported that no infections of clade 1b of the most lethal and rapidly spreading variant of Mpox (monkeypox) have been detected in the country. Instead, the confirmed cases belong to the clade II variant, identified in 2022.

The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a health emergency on August 14, urging countries to strengthen their epidemiological surveillance systems for the detection of this virus. In Mexico, the laboratories of the National Network of Public Health Laboratories are in charge of carrying out this work.

Of the total number of confirmed cases, 58 men contracted the infection and three were women.

As of Monday, September 2, 61 cases of monkeypox or mpox have been registered in Mexico so far in 2024.

The Ministry of Health reported that in the penultimate week of August, three new cases were registered in Mexico City, two in Sonora and one in Veracruz.

Of the total number of confirmed cases, 58 men contracted the infection and three were women.

There is no alert in the country for an uncontrolled outbreak, but the National Committee for Epidemiological Surveillance (Conave) issued a notice for medical units throughout Mexico to report possible cases of mpox.

On September 3, Santiago Molina, an Argentine citizen, died of MPOX in the general hospital of Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo. The 28-year-old foreigner had been admitted to intensive care on August 23 after presenting severe symptoms and a bronchoaspiration that caused his death.

Meanwhile, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) announced that the Bavarian Nordic company began the process of registering the “Jynneos” vaccine for commercialization in Mexico, which can only be applied to people over 18 years of age.

On August 14, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued an international alert due to the massive outbreak of monkeypox cases in Africa.
