    The Monkeypox virus has been confirmed in Jamaica.

    Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton told a press conference this afternoon that the case is a man who recently returned to Jamaica from the United Kingdom.

    Tufton said he went to the public health system on July 5, having arrived on the island five days earlier.

    He said the patient has been isolated and his close contacts are in quarantine.

    He said contract tracing will continue if it becomes necessary.

      Monkeypox patient fled hospital isolation 'to enjoy' Jamaica vacation

      The monkeypox patient who fled the May Hospital in Clarendon on Saturday reportedly said he wanted to "enjoy" his vacation in Jamaica.

      “He said that he is not going to spend so much money to come here and not enjoy himself and he told them (other patients) that by 10 a.m. he was gonna leave the hospital and he has already called his ride,” said a healthcare worker at the hospital who was not authorised to speak on the matter.

      “He is selfish and stay bad and he is inconsiderate,” added the official, fuming.

      The Health Ministry confirmed that the man jumped through a window at the hospital some time after noon and left in a waiting motorcar.

      It's the first case of the contagious virus detected on the island...

        UPDATE | Monkeypox patient back in hospital isolation

        The monkeypox patient who fled the May Pen Hospital in Clarendon early Saturday afternoon is back in isolation.

        The institution's chief executive officer Eugena Clarke-James confirmed the development.

        "He is back and he is safe," she said, declining to state where the man was picked up.

        The man was found by a team of police and hospital officials.

        Clarke-James said hospital officials are meeting to determine how to improve security to prevent a recurrence...

          A second case of the monkeypox virus has been confirmed in Jamaica.

          It comes a day after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency, the highest alert that agency can issue.

          The Health and Wellness Ministry says the latest Jamaican case is an imported one involving a male who recently returned to the island from New York in the United States...

            Jamaica records fifth case of Monkeypox virus

            Jamaica has confirmed its fifth case of monkeypox. The case was confirmed last week.

            The positive case is a man from Kingston and St. Andrew the first case reported outside of rural Jamaica.

            The Ministry of Health and Wellness in its latest statement said the case was detected in Kingston and St Andrew. The other four confirmed cases were reported in the parishes of Clarendon, St. Elizabeth, and St. James.

            The health authorities also announced that this is Jamaica’s third locally transmitted monkeypox case, meaning the person had no recent travel history and is not linked to any of the previous cases.

            The patient is quarantining at home...

                  Jamaica records one more monkeypox case in the last week

                  KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica recorded one additional case of the monkeypox virus for the period ending Sunday, October 23, bringing the country's virus toll to 15, according to the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

                  There are, however, only two active cases of the virus on the island. Twelve people have reportedly recovered from the virus since the first case was recorded on the island back in July. One death is under investigation, the Health Ministry said.

                  Five monkeypox patients are currently in home quarantine...
