Monkeypox in Puerto Vallarta: first case of the disease

    Jun 8, 2022

    Mexicanist

Monkeypox: Jalisco reports the first case of the disease, the subject was in Puerto Vallarta. It is a citizen of the United States, who upon learning he was sick, fled; those who were at Mantamar Beach Club will be watched.

The Ministry of Health of Jalisco (SSJ) reported the first case of monkeypox in the State, a man who managed to escape and who was in Puerto Vallarta over the weekend, so they called to be vigilant to those who were at Mantamar Beach Club.

The affected is a 48-year-old man, originally from and resident of Dallas, Texas, who visited Puerto Vallarta for tourist purposes accompanied by his partner. The man started showing symptoms on May 30: cough, chills, muscle pain, and pustule-like lesions on his face, neck, and trunk.

On June 3, he contacted a physician in Texas to report his condition, who recommended he seek medical attention and made a suspicious case report to the CDC and the CDC to the CNEI in Mexico. As relevant background, the person traveled to Berlin, Germany, from May 12th to 16th; he returned to Dallas on May 16th, and on May 27th he arrived in Puerto Vallarta on vacation.
The man managed to flee when he was suspected of having the disease.

The man went to a private hospital in Puerto Vallarta, and upon suspicion of this disease, he was told to take samples and isolation, which he refused and escaped from the unit. After being notified by the SSJ, on June 4 the case was followed up by personnel from the Sanitary Region VIII Puerto Vallarta, without being able to locate the affected person by any means of communication.

According to information from the place where the couple was staying, it was reported that they were seen leaving with suitcases on June 4; however, given that the patient was scheduled to fly from Puerto Vallarta to Dallas on June 6, the International Health area of Puerto Vallarta informed the National Migration Institute and the Airlines of the patient's situation so that he would not be allowed to enter or board the aircraft, as well as immediately notifying International Health.

On June 6, the CDC notified the CNEI that the patient traveled to the USA on June 4 without specifying the airline, flight, or schedule. On June 7, notification was received by the CNEI reporting the positive PCR test for Orthopoxvirus DNA (not variola virus), and only awaiting confirmation by CDC laboratories.

The individual had been to several parties

It was also reported that the patient, during his stay in Puerto Vallarta, was present at several parties, some of them held at a hotel in the port. Due to the above, epidemiological surveillance was reinforced in the health units, search for risk contacts, and recommendations to the population.

Puerto Vallarta launches a protocol to prevent smallpox. Jalisco is in second place nationally with 69 confirmed cases. The LGBT+ community is alerted.

Mexican health agency issues warning on possible monkeypox transmission at Puerto Vallarta gay beach club
        by Ed Walsh
        Friday Jun 10, 2022

The Ministry of Health for the Mexican state of Jalisco has issued a warning over monkeypox aimed at anyone who visited a gay beach club in Puerto Vallarta last week.

In a statement posted in stilted English on the department's Facebook page Wednesday, June 8, the department wrote, "In Jalisco, we have strengthened surveillance to detect monkeypox cases on time and help provide timely attention. For further information please contact our Call Center at 33-3823-3220 or the Epidemiological and Health Intelligence Unit (UIES) of Secretaría de Salud de Jalisco (Jalisco Ministry of Health) at 33-3030-5000 ext. 35059 and 35072."

The announcement included a graphic in English that advised anyone who attended parties at the Mantamar Beach Club between May 27 and June 4 and "especially" those who have exhibited symptoms to seek immediate medical help. The posting lists medical facilities in Puerto Vallarta.

The post drew dozens of mostly negative comments on Facebook, including from someone who posted a Photoshopped image showing apes from a "Planet of the Apes" movie superimposed on the pool at Mantamar. Another wrote in Spanish that diseases are always brought to Mexico by foreigners and the government does nothing...

Epidemiological surveillance continues in Jalisco for monkeypox, two suspected cases detected

          Sat, 06/11/2022 - 00:06 -- communication.social

The SSJ maintains orientation, information and care actions for people who present symptoms or have doubts about it. Both patients remain awaiting confirmation.

In follow-up to the active epidemiological surveillance implemented by the Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ) since May 24, and reinforced after the confirmation of the case of monkeypox in a person of American origin, actions for detection and timely care continue. of the disease in health units throughout the State.

A module was immediately installed in Puerto Vallarta to provide information and clarify doubts to those who present suggestive symptoms. Likewise, a visit was made to the aforementioned beach club and the place where the first affected person was staying for active surveillance with the staff. There, 23 people have been identified who, at the time of the visit, are healthy.

From June 8 to the cut off this Friday, 18 people attended the Regional Public Health Laboratory in Puerto Vallarta, three to other state units and thirteen communicated by telephone.

To date, Epidemiology staff is monitoring the health status of 37 people, including some who attended care and some contacts.

          SUSPICIOUS CASES

Case 1.A 40-year-old male person, originally from Toronto, Canada and a resident of Puerto Vallarta. He was at the beach club between May 27 and June 4. He began with symptoms on June 7 with papules and itching that began in the head, posterior to the thorax and lower extremities. Isolation was indicated for 21 days and samples were taken. Pending result of the Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE).

Case 2.A 23-year-old female person, resident of Zapopan. She had interaction with foreign people. She began with symptoms on May 31, with papules that began on the head and later on to the chest, abdomen and extremities, she also presented fever, muscle and joint pain. Isolation was indicated for 21 days and samples were taken. Pending result of the Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE).

          MONKEYPOX

You can get monkeypox through close physical contact with someone who has symptoms. The rash, body fluids (such as fluid, pus, or blood from skin lesions), and scabs are especially infectious. Clothing, bedding, towels, or objects such as eating utensils or dishes that have been contaminated with the virus from contact with an infected person can also infect other people.

Ulcers, lesions, or sores in the mouth can also be infectious, meaning the virus can be spread through saliva. People who interact closely with someone infected, such as healthcare workers, family members and sexual partners, are therefore at higher risk of infection.

It is important to note that people with monkeypox are infectious as long as they have symptoms (usually two to four weeks).

How is a suspected case defined?

This is any person, of any age, with an unexplained acute skin or mucosal rash that progresses from the face with extension to the rest of the body and who presents one or more of the following signs or symptoms, concurrent or immediately:

          • Pain headache
          • Acute onset fever above 38.5 °C
          • Swollen glands
          • Muscle pain
          • Fatigue or weakness

In case of doubt, you can call the Call Center at 33-3823-3220 orEpidemiological and Sanitary Intelligence Unit (UIES) of the Jalisco Ministry of Health at 33-3030-5000 ext. 35059 and 35072.

Jalisco already has 5 cases of monkeypox; four are foreigners
Of this total, only one patient remains in the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara, who could be discharged this Saturday
                June 17, 2022

The Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ) confirmed on the afternoon of this Friday, June 17, that there are already five cases of monkey or monkeypox in the state.

At a press conference, Dr. Fernando Petersen, head of the SSJ, explained that in the last hours four more infections were added after notification by the Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE).

Two of them are related to the foreign patient who went to Puerto Vallarta and then fled to Texas, United States, after refusing isolation.

For this reason, he mentioned that prevention actions on this disease have focused on the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area and on the beach destination:

“These are cases that are generally associated with international cases, so from an epidemiological perspective we have focused our attention on the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area and Puerto Vallarta, places where international airports and ports are located”

And it is that of the total, four are foreigners and only one is Mexican; In addition to the age of those infected, it ranges between 38 and 54 years.

However, of the four new cases, only one remains in the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara (HCG), who could be discharged next Saturday, June 18.

In this regard, Dr. Jaime Andrade Villanueva, director of the HCG, commented that said patient was kept under hospital observation upon arrival with a widespread picture of skin lesions with fever.

“We hospitalized him because initially we thought he had chickenpox, he is a person who has a history of a disease for which he receives an immunosuppressant and we thought he had disseminated chickenpox. He called our attention to two things, he had a very slight fever and no significant allopathies in his neck”.

During the remote conference, two cases that had been considered suspicious were ruled out, including that of a 28-year-old woman, originally from Zapopan.

At the moment, health authorities have followed up on 44 people who may have had some contact with the first case of monkeypox detected in Puerto Vallarta and there are 18 people who have sought medical attention or requested information...

...On June 14, Dr. Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, reported that up to that time five cases of monkeypox had been detected in the country, of which four were reported in the city. of Mexico and that of Jalisco.

In this sense, now there are already 9 infected in total in Mexico. Given the growing doubt about the behavior of this disease, the doctor rejected the possibility that monkeypox could become a pandemic.

According to López-Gatell, “the most likely” is that more cases will continue to be registered “sporadically” and eventually some outbreaks; however, he denied that there are signs that it could turn into a pandemic like COVID-19

Colima recorded its first case of monkeypox; there are already 13 in Mexico
The entity also announced that two suspected cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown origin were registered in two minors.
                        July 9, 2022

The Colima Ministry of Health reported this Saturday afternoon that it detected the first case of monkey or monkeypox in the state.

Through a statement, he explained that it is a 45-year-old woman who presented symptoms such as fever, pain in muscles, joints and skin rashes on the face, neck, shoulders and lower extremities that caused itching.

And it is that the patient had contact with a person from Jalisco -entity with the most registered cases in the country- and with people who had recently traveled to the United States; both contacts without apparent symptoms or visible injuries.

For this reason, the woman must undergo strict isolation for 21 days, frequent hand washing, as well as the mandatory use of face masks. Likewise, she and her contacts will have clinical follow-up to prevent spread.

The agency emphasized that if someone has signs and symptoms consistent with monkeypox, they should go to the nearest hospital immediately for medical attention.

With this update, 13 cases of the disease have been confirmed in Mexico so far: five in Jalisco, four in Mexico City, two in the State of Mexico and one more in Nuevo León.

It should be remembered that the first case registered in Mexico was on June 8 and it was a 48-year-old tourist, a resident of Dallas (Texas, USA), who arrived in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, for vacation reasons. During his stay, he was present at various celebrations, especially at the Mantamar Beach Club.

When presenting symptoms, he went to a private hospital in the beach destination and, given the suspicion of this disease, samples were taken and isolation was indicated, which he refused and fled the country...

There are 35 cases of monkeypox in Mexico: PAHO
                            07/13/2022

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported that to date 25 cases of monkeypox, known as "monkeypox", have been detected in Mexico. At a press conference, the Incident Manager for Covid-19 in America, Sylvain Aldighieri, specified that the entity with the highest number of cases detected is Mexico City, with 22 infections.

Jalisco is in second position with 9 cases, while the states of Veracruz, Colima, Nuevo Léon and Baja California each have one registered case. The PAHO official explained that 94% of those infected are men, of whom 60% have HIV. In addition, the most affected population group is between 30 and 49 years of age.

Aldighieri pointed out that no deaths from the disease have been reported, but expressed his concern about the high number of infections without travel history. “In many countries in the region where we have well-characterized data, the proportion of cases with no travel history is increasing every epidemiological week, highlighting our concern about establishing more sustained transmission,” he said.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that three thousand infections were reported globally in recent days, so the number of cases currently amounts to 9,200 in 63 countries. To date, 3 deaths have been reported from this disease.

Sinaloa detected its first case of monkeypox; there are already 36 in Mexico

This is a man who recently traveled to Mexico City and Jalisco, the states with the most cases of the disease in the country.
                              July 16, 2022

The head of the Sinaloa Ministry of Health, Dr. Cuitláhuac González, reported this Saturday afternoon that the first case of monkey or monkeypox in the state was detected.

At a press conference, the official explained that it is a man who recently traveled to Mexico City and Guadalajara, Jalisco, the two states with the most cases of this disease.

It is worth mentioning that he remains in a stable condition, but in home isolation and under close medical surveillance.

The report submitted by the Epidemiology Subdirectorate specified that the infected person returned to the city of Culiacán on July 3, but the first symptoms did not appear until the 11th of that month.

He immediately went to the medical service, where the corresponding samples were taken and analyzed at the State Public Health Laboratory, but it was not until this weekend that the disease was confirmed.

Dr. González Galindo called on people who have been in contact with suspected monkeypox patients to go immediately to the nearest health sector units, since the first symptoms appear between seven and ten days later. and if their contagion is confirmed, they must remain incommunicado for 21 days.

He explained that this illness is not fatal, since data from the World Health Organization (WHO) state that only between 3 and 6% of patients who die are those with immunocompromised conditions such as HIV or degenerative chronic.

For its part, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported on July 13 that at least 35 confirmed cases of monkeypox had been found in Mexico, plus this Saturday.
