Mexico leads monkeypox deaths in the Americas
      July 3, 2023 6,133

In Mexico, 29 deaths from monkeypox have been confirmed, which represents a quarter of the total deaths in the American continent and a fifth worldwide due to this disease. The country ranks second in deaths globally, surpassing even entire regions such as Africa, Europe, the eastern Mediterranean and southeast Asia.

Although Brazil and Colombia have a higher number of confirmed cases, records indicate that Mexico has a higher number of deaths compared to these nations. Brazil reports 16 deaths with 10,950 confirmed cases, while Colombia has not registered any deaths with 4,090 confirmed cases. Despite the lack of vaccination in the country, Mexico ranks fourth in confirmed cases on the continent, with 4,026, behind only the United States, Brazil and Colombia.

According to reports from the World Health Organization (WHO), between January 1, 2022 and June 27, 2023, there have been a total of 147 deaths in the world, of which 117 occurred in the American continent. , being the United States and Mexico responsible for more than 60% of them. In the last three weeks, 69 new cases have been reported in the Americas, and in the last three months, Mexico has reported 89 new cases as of June 14.

Worldwide, weekly reported cases have experienced an increase of 73.9% from the week of June 12 to 18 (46 cases) to the week of June 19 to 25 (80 cases). The 10 countries with the most confirmed cases represent 83.8% of the world total and are the United States, Brazil, Spain, France, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada. However, Mexico ranks second in terms of deaths.

Compared to the United States, Mexico has 13% of the total confirmed cases, but deaths represent 69% of those registered in the neighboring country. Of the 29 deaths reported in Mexico, 28 were men and one woman, aged between 27 and 65. 93% of the deceased had HIV infection as comorbidity, 14% syphilis and 10% diabetes mellitus, according to the most recent technical report on epidemiological surveillance of Mpox in Mexico.

As worldwide, in Mexico monkeypox cases predominate in men (97%) in the 30-34 age group, with 1,050 of the confirmed cases belonging to this category. Regarding the sexual orientation of infected people, 48.3% identify as gay, 30.1% are men who have sex with men, 14.4% are heterosexual, 6.65% are bisexual, 0.05% are lesbian and 0.05% belong to another category. The states with the highest incidence of cases per 100,000 inhabitants are Mexico City, Quintana Roo and Yucatán.

The main way Mpox is transmitted is through sexual contact, not necessarily penetration. The use of condoms is recommended and avoid ejaculation on surfaces, since there may be virus particles in the semen. The contagion is latent while the lesions are active. Given the appearance of symptoms such as red and painful lesions, fever and headache, it is important to go to a specialized service to receive a diagnosis.

In the same report, the Ministry of Health highlights that the epidemic curve shows that the outbreak in Mexico maintains a relatively low transmission rate. Although various organizations and government officials have indicated the need for the vaccine, Mexico is still analyzing the evidence and effectiveness of the available vaccines, unlike other countries in the region that have obtained them through the Revolving Fund of the Pan American Health Organization. Health.

Despite repeated questions about the official reasons for not acquiring vaccines, the Ministry of Health has not yet provided an answer.
