First monkeypox death in Mexico: Everything we know
The death of a person from septic shock, acquired pneumonia and HIV could be the first death from monkeypox in Mexico.
    By
    Rodrigo Rojas-
    08/23/2022

Until August 22, 386 infections have been confirmed in 24 states of the country.
The death of a person from septic shock, acquired pneumonia and HIV infection could be the first death from monkeypox in Mexico.
Worldwide there have been 41 thousand 664 cases and 12 deaths.

The health situation around the world remains at a complicated time due to all the problems that occur at the same time. Only in our country today was a death announced that could be the first caused by monkeypox in Mexico.

All part of the official information published by the Ministry of Health (SSa). What it mentions is that until August 22, 386 infections have been confirmed in 24 states of the country.

The Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE) reported that the positive cases are distributed in: Mexico City, 209 infections; Jalisco, 69; State of Mexico, 21; Yucatan, 20; Quintana Roo, 12; Baja California, eight; Nuevo Leon, seven; Chiapas, five; Veracruz, five; Puebla, four; Tabasco, four; Morelos, three; Colima, two; Chihuahua, two; Guanajuato, two; Oaxaca, two; Queretaro, two; Sinaloa, two; Sound, two; Aguascalientes, one; Baja California Sur, one; Coahuila, one; Michoacán, one, and San Luis Potosí, one.
    Characteristics of the patients

Of the total confirmed cases, 97 percent correspond to men and three percent to women. 47.2 percent of people are between 30 and 39 years old; that is, 182. Likewise, four are under 20 years old; 90, from 20 to 29; 81 between 40 and 49; 25 from 50 to 59; and four people, 60 years or older.

In detail, the Weekly Technical Report on Epidemiological Surveillance mentions that a total of 862 people who meet the operational definition of a probable case have been identified. Of that number there are 386 that have been confirmed, in addition to 172 under study and 304 ruled out by laboratory tests.
The first death from monkeypox in Mexico?

The same document adds that one person died of septic shock, acquired pneumonia and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. At the same time, when medical care was offered, it was identified that he had lesions compatible with monkeypox, and the test was positive.

Based on the above, the death is carefully analyzed by a group of experts in infectology to determine if there is a cause attributable to monkeypox virus infection.

It is still too early to say that the patient's death was directly caused by monkeypox, although some portals have already made the news official. The reality is that it is appropriate to wait until the results of the analyzes are obtained to be certain of the origin of death...

Health reported that so far, four cases of monkeypox in minors are known: two belong to 18-year-olds, while the other two patients are 3 and 9 years old, respectively. .

On the other hand, Mexico City continues to be the entity with the most confirmed cases, since it now has 209, 68 more infections than was reported a week ago. Jalisco appears in second place with 69 confirmed cases. Both entities represent more than 70 percent of the infections reported by the Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE).

Monkeypox advances in Mexico: 252 cases in 20 entities
Mexico City, Jalisco and Yucatán are the states that lead the figures in terms of the number of infections in the country
    August 17, 2022

The Ministry of Health (Ssa) reported that up to August 15, 252 cases of monkeypox were confirmed in the Mexican Republic. The infections are distributed in 20 states, of which Mexico City tops the list with 141.

Mexico City is followed by Jalisco with 46 and Yucatán with 15. The rest of the states where cases of monkeypox have been registered have less than 10, they are the following:

-State of Mexico and Quintana Roo with 9 each.

-Baja California, Chiapas, Nuevo León and Veracruz with 4 cases respectively.

    -Tabasco with 3.

    - Oaxaca, Puebla and Colima with 2 each.

-Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Michoacán, Morelos, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí and Sinaloa with one each.

In total, during this epidemiological week, 610 people presented the symptomatic picture of the disease, of which 131 are under study, 227 have been ruled out and 252 have been confirmed.

It is worth mentioning that the number of infections in this Weekly Technical Epidemiological Surveillance Report is considerably higher than that recorded in the previous one. Last week the Ssa reported 147 cases of monkeypox, that is, 106 more cases were added.

There was also a change in the geographical distribution of cases. Previously they were concentrated in 18 states, while in the most recent report mention was made of 20 states where infections have been registered.

Currently, males are the most affected by monkeypox, since 94% of infections are concentrated in men and 6% in women. Regarding the average age of the men who have been infected, the health authorities estimate that 45.6 percent are between 30 and 39 years old.

Globally, until August 12, 34,081 cases and 12 deaths were recorded, which are distributed in 92 countries.
What are the symptoms of monkeypox and how can it be prevented?

According to the website viruela.salud.gob.mx, the symptom picture of monkeypox consists of sudden fever, headache, exhaustion, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, profound weakness, and skin lesions, specifically blisters that may appear in any part of the body. It is worth mentioning that sometimes not all symptoms are present.

Regarding the way in which contagion can be prevented, the Ssa has emphasized the importance of avoiding close physical contact (including sexual contact) with people with monkeypox or who are probably infected and not touching objects that have touched sick people.

It is also necessary to take some general measures such as constantly washing your hands with soap or antibacterial gel, using a condom during sexual intercourse, practicing the etiquette sneeze and using the mask correctly.

People who live with a person who has been diagnosed with monkeypox should follow specific instructions. Mainly isolate the patient, use a mask at all times, wash the sick person's clothes, towels and sheets and eating utensils with warm water and detergent; clean and disinfect any contaminated surface, as well as dispose of the healing material properly by throwing them in a tightly closed bag, depositing it in a place separated from the rest of the garbage and washing your hands afterwards.

Mexico confirms 60 cases of monkeypox but denies "widespread" spread
    By Newsroom Infobae
    July 26, 2022

Mexico City, July 26. The Mexican government reports 60 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the country in a period of almost two months, Hugo López-Gatell, undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, reported Tuesday, who denied that it will spread "widely."

“In Mexico we have had 60 cases so far. Yes, it is expected that more cases will continue to occur, as we will continue to look for them with active surveillance that we have mounted since the beginning of the World Health Organization (WHO) warning," López-Gatell declared at the daily government conference.

After confirming the first case on May 28, 11 states have registered patients with the disease, concentrated in particular in Mexico City and Jalisco, a state in the west of the country.

But Undersecretary López-Gatell, in charge of the covid-19 pandemic in Mexico, pointed out that there have been no deaths and only five people have been hospitalized.

The official argued that "this is not a disease that is expected to spread widely."

"This disease is not going to behave like covid-19, it is not universally or extensively spread, it occurs in small outbreaks in certain key populations and transmission is mostly through contact with the skin of people when they are in the active phase. ", he indicated...

Until July 18, Mexico had 48 confirmed cases, so the number rose during the last 7 days, reaching almost 25 percent in 10 entities of the country.

This after the state of Oaxaca was added to the list of entities that have one or more confirmed cases of monkeypox, causing alarm after the announcement by the World Health Organization that declared that monkeypox became a global health emergency.

The WHO considered that the monkeypox outbreak represents a high-impact threat to the world population, requiring a rapid response.

For its part, Mexico indicated that the studies that are currently being carried out, the patients who are testing positive are between 30 and 49 years of age.

So far, there have been no reports of people dying from this monkeypox transmission.

Mexico confirms 55 cases of monkeypox and expands preventive measures
    By Focus News / EFE
    07/24/2022

Mexico City.- The Government of Mexico confirmed 55 cases of monkeypox in the country while expanding prevention, surveillance and control measures for the disease, for which the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a international health emergency.

In a statement, the Mexican Ministry of Health (SSA) reported that, as of July 23, 55 cases have been confirmed in nine states of the 32 that make up the country. Mexico detected its first case on May 28. After being declared a public health emergency of international importance (ESPII), the WHO presented a series of recommendations for the member countries of this organization.

"The ESPII declaration meets several criteria, not necessarily because it is a serious or rapidly spreading disease," the SSa noted in the note.

In addition, he said that the WHO “considers it as mild, self-limited and of low transmission. Its clinical features, transmission mechanisms, and rate of spread are considerably different from COVID-19.” For this reason, Salud de México said that the new phase of the package of preventive interventions "incorporates the issuance of a second Epidemiological Notice of Monkeypox for all medical and public health units."

In addition, he said that they present the clinical practice guidelines for standardized care and the automated call center will be enabled to guide people and facilitate access to care. While on the specific website for monkeypox various informational materials for health promotion will be presented, health personnel will be trained and awareness and risk management workshops will be held for key populations, among other measures.

"The guidelines for epidemiological surveillance and laboratory diagnosis, in force since the beginning of the epidemic in May 2022, have guided the timely detection and confirmation of suspected cases," the agency said.

The SSa recalled that the disease is transmitted by direct contact with infected animals such as monkeys and rodents; by exposure to secretions of an infected person through mucous membranes or skin lesions. Also, by eating undercooked meat and other animal products contaminated with the virus. Other known mechanisms include respiratory droplets and objects contaminated with the body fluids of the sick person.

He specified that in Mexico monkeypox is not an endemic disease, so transmission is mainly through close contact (including sexual intercourse) with infected people during their period of contagion or through contaminated objects (clothes, bedding, towels). and others).

Global emergency due to Monkeypox: with 52 cases in Mexico, the states on alert where they have been detected
