In Guadeloupe, the health situation linked to Covid-19 is alarming, as of Thursday, August 19. With 60 deaths in a week, the CHU mortuary is saturated with bodies piling up every day.

At the Pointe-à-Pitre University Hospital (Guadeloupe) , large-scale death is now part of the daily life of caregivers. The bodies pile up in the corridors of the morgue and the service overflows. The nursing staff therefore try to find solutions by creating spaces to accommodate the bodies. The Paris firefighters came to reinforce the island, for example, installed two containers in the parking lot of the hospital, as well as two ephemeral morgues with 12 places each.

Reorganize the funeral taking into account the epidemic situation

Overwhelmed funeral directors make the same observation. The waiting lists are constantly growing and we must therefore reorganize the funeral while taking into account the situation of the epidemic on the island. With the sudden increase in deaths, company personnel could run out of supplies in the days to come.

On the Covid-19 front , confinement is starting to bear fruit in Martinique. On the other hand, the situation remains extremely worrying in Guadeloupe, where there are around ten deaths every day. Hospitals are overwhelmed and patients transferred to France.

At the Pointe-à-Pitre University Hospital (Guadeloupe) , we can count the bodies by dozens . On the island, the health crisis is of such magnitude that the morgues are totally submerged . To preserve the bodies of the deceased, refrigerated containers were urgently installed in the parking lot of the CHU. But they will soon be filled. In Guadeloupe, the incidence rate is exploding: 2,156 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, against only 47 in early July.

    Evacuations of patients continue
At the Basse-Terre hospital, there are no more rooms available. Patients on oxygen occupy the corridors and the sick keep coming. The sick are getting younger and younger. Faced with hospital tension, new caregivers in metropolitan areas will be sent as reinforcements from Friday, August 20. Evacuations of sick people are also continuing. Eight patients on respiratory assistance are expected to leave the West Indies in the next few hours.
