Covid case numbers soar 44% to 92,000 in one week; 15,000 new cases Wednesday
But hospitalizations and deaths remain well below previous levels
Published on Thursday, July 22, 2021

Active coronavirus cases increased 44% over the past week, according to federal Health Ministry estimates, while on Wednesday Mexico recorded its highest single day case tally since January.

There are currently 92,738 estimated active cases, the Health Ministry reported Wednesday as it announced 15,198 new infections, the highest daily tally since January 30, when Mexico was amid the second – and worst – wave of the pandemic.

The highly contagious Delta strain of the virus is driving a third wave but while case numbers have risen quickly, hospitalizations and deaths remain, for now, well below the levels seen during the first and second waves, indicating that Mexico’s vaccine rollout is achieving its goal...

Mexican gov’t downplays Covid-19 3rd wave despite strain on hospitals
    Online News EditorJuly 30, 2021
    By Eduard Ribas i Admetlla

Mexico City, Jul 30 (EFE).- A third Covid-19 wave in Mexico already is putting hospitals under severe strain, some of which are facing bed-occupancy rates of nearly 100 percent.

Even so, the government has downplayed the seriousness of the new spike in cases and expressed confidence that progress with the vaccine rollout will keep coronavirus fatalities low.

“We’re suffering from the third wave. The hospitals are full, and no one says anything,” a nurse treating coronavirus patients in Mexico City who spoke on condition of anonymity told Efe.

Mexico registered 19,223 new confirmed cases over the most recent 24-hour period, a figure not seen since the peak of the second wave in January. The country has reported more than 2.8 million coronavirus cases and attributed nearly 240,000 deaths (the fourth-highest total worldwide) to Covid-19 since the onset of the pandemic.

The latest surge in cases began in May in tourist areas and has gradually spread nationwide, causing hospitals to fill up once again with seriously ill patients who arrive by ambulance...

Map of the coronavirus in Mexico August 9: seven states remain on maximum alert
The number of deaths caused by COVID-19 in Mexico rose to 244,420, after the Ministry of Health registered 172 new deaths in the last 24 hours
      August 9, 2021

The number of deaths caused by COVID-19 in Mexico amounted to 244,420, after the Ministry of Health recorded 172 new deaths in the last 24 hours. Likewise, it reported 7,573 new cases compared to the previous day, with which the country has already accumulated 2,971,817 infections since SARS-CoV-2 reached the national territory.

In addition to this, 475,319 suspected cases, 5,330,849 negative and 8,777,985 people studied since the health contingency began. However, according to the Daily Technical Report, the number of estimated cases of COVID-19 decreased 1% compared to the previous week, after nine weeks of increasing the epidemic.

In addition, epidemiological week number 30 opened with 139,361 estimated active cases, which represent 4.4% of the total pandemic, that is, people who have presented symptoms of COVID-19 in the last 14 days (July 26 to August 8, 2021 ) and that if all sanitary measures are not maintained, they could potentially contribute to the transmission of the virus.

In this sense, Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Nuevo León, Jalisco, Veracruz, Tabasco, San Luis Potosí, Guerrero, Quintana Roo, Nayarit, Puebla are the entities with the highest number of active cases (more than 3,000 cases) , followed by Michoacán, Sonora, Guanajuato, Colima, Tamaulipas, Oaxaca, Querétaro, Sinaloa, Hidalgo, Coahuila, Yucatán, Durango, Baja California Sur, Zacatecas, Chiapas and Campeche as the entities with more than 1,000 cases of this type.

With these records, Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most deaths from COVID-19, behind the United States, Brazil and India, and is sixteenth in number of confirmed infections, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.

      COVID traffic light

This is also reflected in the new colors of the epidemiological traffic light that come into force as of this Monday and will be in force until August 22.

In the color “red” (maximum risk of contagion) there will be seven states, six more than two weeks ago: Sinaloa remains and Mexico City, Nuevo León, Jalisco, Guerrero, Colima and Nayarit are added. On the contrary, in the color “green” (low risk) it was only possible to maintain one entity: Chiapas.

In "orange" (high risk) will be 15 entities: Sonora and Durango joined. Baja California Sur, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Veracruz, State of Mexico, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Oaxaca and Quintana Roo remain.

While in "yellow" or moderate risk, there will be nine states: Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, Morelos, Campeche, Tabasco and Yucatán.

Mexico Covid Cases Rise by Record as Pandemic Surges Anew
        Dale Quinn, Bloomberg News

(Bloomberg) -- Mexico saw a record rise in Covid-19 cases Wednesday as the spread of the pandemic accelerates after several months of relief from the virus.

Cases rose 22,711 to 3,020,596, according to Health Ministry data. Deaths increased by 727.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has reiterated that while cases are increasing, the proportion of severe illness that leads to death is lower than it was during the winter peak. At a morning press conference, the president touted the vaccine campaign and encouraged people to get a shot.

“There are infections, but there are fewer hospitalizations, and more importantly, fewer deaths, because the vaccine is helping a lot,” Lopez Obrador said...
