Deaths surge in Mexico as pandemic extracts a heavy toll
Covid-19 tsar says his conscience is clear despite one of the world’s highest excess death rates

Deaths in Mexico last year were 52 per cent higher than in previous years, putting the rate of excess deaths during the coronavirus pandemic well above that in some countries seen as suffering the worst outbreaks in the world, including the US, UK and Brazil.

New official data showed Mexico has registered 977,081 deaths since March 2020, compared with an expected 641,556 for the same period based on the 2015-19 death tolls. Since the start of the epidemic, Mexico has officially confirmed more than 2m cases and almost 180,000 deaths from Covid-19.

Total so-called excess deaths per million in Mexico last year were 2,602 — 52 per cent higher than 1,713 in the US and nearly twice as high as Brazil’s 1,047, according to Eugenio S?nchez, a Mexican statistician who has examined world mortality data compiled by Israeli economist Ariel Karlinsky and Russian researcher Dmitry Kobak. Compared with the UK, Mexico's toll is 75 per cent higher.

Peru was the world’s worst-hit nation, according to that data, and Ecuador and Bolivia have also been hard hit in terms of excess deaths during the pandemic, underscoring the virus' heavy human toll on Latin America.

The tally of excess deaths in Mexico has called into question whether its largely hands-off approach was the right one. But Hugo L?pez-Gatell, Mexico’s coronavirus tsar, told the Financial Times in an interview that his “conscience is very clear”...

Mexico Says Excess Deaths in 2020-21 Have Exceeded 417,000

Deaths above expected levels double official Covid fatalities
Overstretched health systems and a shortage of testing

Excess deaths in Mexico for 2020 and early 2021 exceeded 417,000, more than double the current official number of fatalities from the coronavirus, the federal government reported.

On Thursday Mexico became the third country with more than 200,000 confirmed Covid-19 deaths, trailing only U.S. and Brazil, countries with much larger populations.

But the overall toll from the pandemic is assumed to be much higher because of the low level of testing that left many Covid cases undiagnosed -- Mexico?s 2.2 million cases rank 14th globally -- and overstretched health systems that curtailed treatment for other conditions...

Mexico Revises COVID Death Toll Count Upwards by 60%
      By VOA News
      Updated March 29, 2021 01:31 AM

Mexico has revised its coronavirus death toll figures, increasing the tally by 60% to make Mexico?s death count second only to the United States and overtaking Brazil as the place with the second highest death count.

The new statistics are staggering as the Mexican population of 126 million is far below the populations of the U.S. and Brazil.

The Mexican health ministry released the data Saturday that raised the country?s COVID death count to more than 321,000. The U.S. death toll from the coronavirus pandemic is more than 549,000, while Brazil?s is more than 312,000, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.

Public health analysts had warned that Mexico?s death count was likely higher than previous figures had indicated because the country?s healthcare system was overwhelmed by the pandemic, resulting in few available intensive care beds that led to many people dying at home whose deaths had not been included in the COVID count. The new numbers follow a government review of death certificates...
