  • World Health Organisation Assembly opens in Geneva

    New York, US - The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday in Geneva, S witzerland, opened its annual assembly, which is dedicated to the A/H1N1 pandemi c influenza, popularly known as the swine flu.

    A WHO statement, issued at the UN headquarters in New York, said the assembly, w hich would run from 17 to 21 May, would enable the participating countries to sh a re influenza virus samples and access to vaccines.

    It also said the conference would focus on the implementation of the internation al health regulations, the monitoring of the achievement of the health-related M i llennium Development Goals (MDGs), health-related innovation and intellectual pr o perty and food safety.

    According to the statement, health ministers from around the world will present their national health report cards and hold discussions on health issues in the v arious regions.

    The Pan African News Agency (PANA) reported that the annual World Health Assembl y attracts health ministers from all WHO member states, as well as other interna t ional health agencies and NGOs.

    The assembly, which is the World Health Organisation's supreme decision-making b ody, sets the policy for the agency and also approves its annual budget.
