Audit finds problems at Disease Outbreak Control Division

KAILUA-KONA ? An audit of the Disease Outbreak Control Division within the Department of Health found breakdowns in communication with other governmental divisions and other issues with the agency during recent disease outbreaks, including the dengue fever outbreak on this island and an outbreak of hepatitis-A on Oahu and Kauai.
The report, released Thursday morning by the state Office of the Auditor, announced three major findings: communication breakdowns between Disease Outbreak Control and other DOH divisions, state and county responders and the public; a lack of consistent end-of-outbreak reviews to identify opportunities for improvement and poor management of records that ?may be hampering outbreak response.?
?These deficiencies,? auditors wrote, ?result in limited accountability to the public and could also result in missed investigation steps and possible delays and/or replication of efforts during an outbreak response.?...
