Saudi confirms 3rd flu case as pandemic declared

          RIYADH (AlArabiya.net)

Saudi Arabia said on Thursday a toddler has tested positive for swine flu, the third such reported case in the kingdom, hours after the World Health Organization declared a pandemic.

The three-and-a-half-year-old boy, along with his family, arrived in Saudi from the United States last Sunday, the official SPA news agency quoted Saudi Health Minister Abdullah al-Rabia as saying.

The toddler was checked into the Armed Forces Hospital in Riyadh on Wednesday when he began showing symptoms of the A(H1N1) virus. Medical tests showed he had been infected with the virus, Rabia said.

"The boy is currently undergoing medical procedures that are taken in such cases," he said, pointing out that members of his family were examined and tested negative for the virus.

A Saudi student who returned from the United States to the kingdom was confirmed as the country's second case of infection by the H1N1 virus on Sunday, just few days after the Gulf kingdom reported its first case of swine flu, a Filipina nurse who tested positive several days after returning from holiday to Saudi Arabia via Bahrain.

Saudi Arabia's neighbor Kuwait said on May 24 that 18 U.S. soldiers had H1N1 flu in the first cases to hit the world's largest oil exporting region. Kuwait has a logistics base for the U.S. army for their Iraq operations.

The flu first arrived in the Middle East via Israel after a man arrived from Mexico, the epicenter of the outbreak, where he had contracted the virus in April.

Extraordinary measures after the arrival of the swine flu of Mecca and Medina

                    Khalid Murghalani

Riyadh / Saudi Arabia is preparing to face the possibility of the spread of swine flu among pilgrims and Umrah performers, particularly with the monitoring of infections of the disease in Mecca and Medina.

And monitoring of the virus (H 1 N 1) with three children in the Saudi city and to the children in the nine-year-old at a hotel near the Holy Mosque in Mecca, according to the Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia.

The discovery of 12 new cases in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing the toll in the Kingdom of the injured to 29 since the first case on the third of June.

The receipt of these cases highlight the risks posed by the virus on millions of pilgrims and pilgrims who are expected to visit SA between August and December, according to Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Murghalani.

Murghalani said that the Saudi government is currently working with experts from WHO and other international organizations to develop a plan to deal with this threat.

The Murghalani in this context that "the whole world concerned about this issue, and we do our best, were guests of Vakadmon Rahman."

The spokesman noted that the Ministry of Health collected quantities of Tamiflu, which is used to treat the disease, and sufficient to address the 10 percent of SA population who are more than 25 million people.

The local press reported that the pharmacies sell large quantities of Tamiflu, in parallel with the growing concern among the population of the spread of swine flu, and the drug is effective in the early stages of the disease from spreading.

According Murghalani expects the Saudi authorities that the risk of the spread of the disease is growing significantly with the start of the peak season in the pilgrimage from the second half of August, during the month of Ramadan next year.

The biggest risk is, of course, during the pilgrimage season in November with the understanding that some 1.7 million pilgrims of the world participated in the pilgrimage last year.

Murghalani said that Saudi Arabia has a health plan for the prevention and treatment of diseases prevalent among the pilgrims, said Murghalani that "Hajj and Umrah are a complex system of control," referring to the non-registration of the spread of any disease or epidemic is among the pilgrims during the past years.

Expects the Saudi Ministry of Health to finalize the plan for addressing the development of swine flu in collaboration with the World Health Organization experts later this month, knowing that the authorities deployed cameras at airports to monitor body temperature and, therefore, to monitor cases of suspected influenza.

Lebanese woman hospitalized in Riyadh with H1N1 infection
                        Mohammed Rasooldeen | Arab News

RIYADH: A 25-year-old Lebanese woman has been diagnosed with swine flu and admitted to the Armed Forces Hospital in Riyadh, bringing the total number of people affected by the disease in the Kingdom to 35, it was announced yesterday.

According to a senior Health Ministry official, the woman caught the disease from another infected person. He said some of the identified cases include people who brought the disease from countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Besides following the routine health advice offered by the ministry, the official said, people should try to keep away from H1N1 sufferers. ?Some of those who have contracted the disease were those who visited and moved closely with patients,? he said.

Meanwhile, extensive arrangements are being made by the ministry to hold a four-day workshop on how to prevent an H1N1 outbreak. The workshop is scheduled to begin on Saturday.

Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Al-Mirghalani said renowned experts on swine flu from the World Health Organization, the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and the Eastern Mediterranean Office in Alexandria have consented to enlighten the audience on the disease and tell them of curative and preventive measures to be taken to control it. Responsible health officials from the 20 health regions in the Kingdom will participate in the workshop, which will be held in Riyadh.

?The workshop will provide an ideal platform for the ministry?s officials to compare notes with experts and accept their suggestions for further improvement of our national strategy to combat the disease,? Al-Mirghalani told Arab News. He said a national committee headed by the health minister himself is responsible for implementing the preventive programs through the ministry?s network.

Al-Mirghalani said the Kingdom, which hosts a big expatriate population, has the additional responsibility to look after hundreds of thousands of foreign Haj and Umrah pilgrims as well as business visitors.

Following the workshop, experts will be taken to the Haj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and other places with huge concentration of pilgrims to get their ideas and suggestions in overcoming the current health crisis.

Al-Mirghalani said Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, who is slated to inaugurate the workshop, is open to any constructive suggestions to combat the disease.
