Re: 3 pregnant women diagnosed with H1N1 in Kazakhstan

South Kazakhstan: 5 pregnant women died in 2012; rumors of pandemic influenza growing; officials keep silence

In late January 2012, the KTK (Commercial TV Channel of Kazakhstan) reported three pregnant women in the South-Kazakhstan region to have the so called swine influenza (H1N1), in addition to two more pregnant women that have died in hospital.

One of the pregnant women has died in an intensive therapy clinic at the International Kazakh-Turkish university just a few hours after arrival. Though no official cause of death has been defined by medics pending outcomes of a long-term research it has been required that all personnel of the clinic should take a test for H1N1 to be on a safe side.

Almost at the same time, another 29-year-old pregnant woman has died in a hospital in Maktaaralskiy district, having shown similar symptoms.

Yet, a deputy director of the regional department of health Ms. Galymzhan Abish is warning against rushing to early conclusions: ?You can?t say that she has died of swine flu or any other flu. Findings of the autopsy are going to be available in two weeks whereupon some preliminary conclusions can be made?. An ad-hoc commission set up by the Ministry of health has been deployed in the South Kazakhstan for purposes of a special investigation in respect to each case of death of a pregnant woman.

The news of a pandemic swine flu has gone public thanks to the nation-wide media: while the online news agency ?Novosti-Kazakhstan? has just retold the information reported by KTK, another national newspaper ?Karavan? has indicated that medics tentatively point to pneumonia as the cause of deaths of the two pregnant women. Pneumonia is however known to be a frequent complication following swine flu and therefore does not exclude a possibility of H1N1.

According to MK-Kazakhstan, the country?s ministry of health has not confirmed the information of pandemic flu cases registered in the South Kazakhstan. The chief sanitary doctor Zhandarbek Bekshin has during his briefing spoken of three cases of seasonal flu only. He has also reminded that in August 2010 the WHO already declared an end to the 2009 H1N1 pandemic globally and included H1N1 vaccine in the seasonal flu vaccine. All over Kazakhstan, some 19 cases of seasonal flu (including H1N1 and H3N2) have been registered during this epidemic season.
