Two women aged 50 and 62 were hospitalized in serious condition in the Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba and the Soroka University Medical Center in Beersheba as a result of 'swine flu' complications. The woman hospitalized in Kfar Saba suffers from a heart condition while the other suffers from chronic illnesses.

The Health Ministry informed that so far 20 serious cases of the H1N1 virus were detected in Israel. One patient, Shimon Azran died in the Yoseftal Hospital in Eilat over the weekend.

The patient admitted in the Meir Hospital is a resident of a moshav in central Israel who had retuned from Europe a week ago and fell ill after her arrival. Five days ago she was hospitalized and within a day her condition deteriorated and she was transferred to intensive care.

Seeing as she suffers from other conditions, doctors initially believed that one of those had aggravated and caused her to feel ill. Only Wednesday did the suspicion of 'swine flu' arise and an examination indeed confirmed it.

The other patient is a Beersheba resident with a heart condition who went into respiratory distress. She is currently admitted in the intensive care unit and is given artificial respiration. She too has been hospitalized for several days.

So far, 1,719 cases of the H1N1 virus have been diagnosed in Israel, however estimates indicate that thousands more were infected but were not diagnosed. The health Ministry's information hot-line received 1,200 complaints thus far.

Meanwhile, doctors in the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem delivered by Caesarean section the baby of the 38-year-old pregnant woman who was hospitalized in serious condition after being infected with the virus. Surgical Intensive Care Unit Director, Dr. Yoram Weiss informed that the operation ended successfully, while the baby was transferred to the premature babies ward and appears to be stabilizing.

He added however that the mother is still in serious condition and that they are working to stabilize her. He also stated that the woman, who was admitted when 30-weeks pregnant, is being treated with the Tamiflu antiviral drug.

Dr. Weiss also referred to the recent conjecture that pregnant women are more likely to be infected with 'swine flu' and are in greater risk of going into complications, "I would say that it is too soon to determine that every pregnant woman is at high risk of being infected. One should be cautious not to get everyone into a state of panic and hysteria in regards to the virus."
