Suspicion of First Two Israeli Swine Flu Deaths

    Reported: 21:01 PM - Jul/26/09

(IsraelNN.com) The Health Ministry announced on Sunday night that it is investigating the possibility that two people who died over the weekend were infected with the H1N1 swine-flu virus before they died. Until now, no deaths have been reported among the more than 1,300 cases diagnosed in Israel.

One of the victims was a heavy smoker in his mid 30's who died on Saturday, a day after he was admitted to Eilat's Yoseftal Hospital with pneumonia. The other was a two-year-old boy who was being treated for a chronic illness at Schneider children's hospital in Petach Tikva. Both were in the high risk group for the disease.

2 swine flu deaths suspected in Israel
    By JPOST.COM STAFF

The Health Ministry was checking suspicions Sunday that two people who passed away over the last two days at Eilat's Yoseftal Hospital and Petah Tikva's Schneider Hospital respectively had died of swine flu.

The two - a 35-year-old man and a two-year-old boy - had been suffering from other illnesses, but had also been in the high-risk category of those diagnosed with swine flu.

The man, who was obese and a heavy smoker, had been suffering from pneumonia, and died on Saturday, a day after being admitted to Yoseftal.

The toddler, who died Friday, had been suffering from a chronic illness.

Lab tests were being conducted and the results were due on Monday.

If the results prove to be positive, the two would be the first swine flu deaths in the country.

Some 900 Israelis have come down with the virus, but most of the cases have been mild.

According to the Health Ministry, people suffering from chronic lung diseases and asthma were in greater risk, as well as people suffering from heart diseases, auto-immune issues and obesity.

Last week, the World Health Organization announced that the number of death from Swine Flu worldwide reached 700. The number stood at 400 only the month before.

Death suspected to be caused by swine flu

Ministry of Health probing death of 34-year-old man over weekend with suspicion that he may have been caused by H1NI virus. Flu ruled out in case of two-year-old toddler, who also died on weekend

The Health Ministry is investigating whether swine flu caused the death of a 34-year-old man who died Saturday night. Swine flu was also suspected in the death of a two-year-old toddler, who also died over the weekend, but lab results have ruled the H1N1 virus out as a cause of his death. Both of the patients belonged to high-risk categories for swine flu complications.

The man, who was hospitalized on Friday at Eilat's Yoseftal Hospital, was reportedly a heavy smoker who suffered from complications arising from pneumonia.

The ministry also looked into the circumstances of the death of a two-year-old toddler who died over the weekend at Schneider Children's Medical Center in Petach Tikva. Lab results showed, however, that the child's death was unrelated to swine flu.

Yoseftal Hospital reported that the 34-year old was admitted to the hospital after complaining of feeling ill. Despite efforts to stabilize his condition, the man died on Saturday evening.

The man's family agreed to the hospital's request to perform an autopsy in order to clarify the cause of death and has also submit a complaint with the police for medical malpractice.

The Schneider Children's Medical Center reported that the toddler was treated with medication against the flu.

If the man did indeed die from swine flu, he would be the first fatal case of the virus in Israel. Until now, 1,100 cases of swine flu have been diagnosed in the country. Just last week, the Health Ministry announced that it is no longer necessary to carry out specialized lab tests or to issue unique medical treatment for swine flu because it is, in their words, "any other flu."

According to Ministry guidelines, only patients in high-risk groups - such as pregnant women, patients with chronic respiratory diseases, patients with suppressed immune systems, or patients with heart conditions ? need to seek medical attention if they contract swine flu.

Until now, six patients with swine flu-related complications have been hospitalized. One of them, a 25-year-old pregnant woman, remains hospitalized in serious condition at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center.

There have been fatalities in the past that have aroused suspicion that swine flu is to blame, but the option of swine flu as a cause of death was ruled out in each of them.

Health Ministry believes Eilat man died of swine flu

Autopsy on body of Eilat resident, 35, who died Saturday reveals he was infected with virus. Family files malpractice claim against hospital for discharging man twice last week

An autopsy performed on the body of 35-year-old Eilat resident Shimon Azran, who died over the weekend, revealed he was infected with swine flu. Health Ministry officials estimated the man died of complications associated with the virus.

The Yoseftal Hospital in Eilat reported that Azran was hospitalized last Friday after feeling sick. Despite efforts to stabilize his condition, he passed away on Saturday.

The man's family agreed to the hospital's request to perform an autopsy in order to clarify the cause of death and has also submitted a complaint with the police for medical malpractice.

According to the family, Azran was hospitalized twice last week but was discharged after doctors concluded he had a viral disease.

"For some reason I feel this is a lie. The Health Ministry is investigating the hospital. We didn't get anything from the pathologist," said Shimon's brother, Avner Azran upon hearing of the ministry's estimates.

"When Shimon was hospitalized they didn't even tell us once that they suspect it's swine flu. They only raised the possibility after he died," he added.

The hospital Director General Avi Goldberg preferred not to comment on whether the doctors suspected Azran had contracted swine flu, and if so why was he not treated with the appropriate medication ? Tamiflu.

"An investigative committee is currently being set up, and we will address every claim once we have the results," he added
