NICOSIA, July 5 (Xinhua) -- A total of 109 cases of Influenza A/H1N1 have been detected in the Republic of Cyprus, the island state's health ministry announced on Sunday.

The ministry, which only monitors the situation in the Greek Cypriot south, said 14 new cases of flu A/H1N1 have been diagnosed within the past 24 hours.

In a press release, the ministry maintained that the situation is being fully monitored and there is no reason for fears.

Although the new flu has taken a pandemic dimension and cases of infection are expected to increase, the symptoms of the flu remained mild, the ministry added.

Meanwhile, health authorities in the breakaway Turkish Cypriot north have confirmed nine cases of the epidemic until now, bringing the total number of the flu cases on the eastern Mediterranean island to 118.

Northern Cyprus confirmed Friday its first death from swine flu in a man who also had suffered from diabetes and chronic pulmonary illness, Agence France-Presse reported.
The victim tested positive for the A(H1N1) virus and died of respiratory failure 10 days after he was admitted to hospital, the health ministry said.

Turkish Cyprus is home to around 200,000 inhabitants.

Cyprus, which itself became an EU member in 2004, has been divided along ethnic lines since 1974 when Turkey intervened in response to an Athens-engineered coup aimed at uniting the island with Greece.

Several hundred cases of swine flu have been detected in the southern part of the eastern Mediterranean island since May but no deaths have been reported.
