Father, 51, is killed by virus

    Posted on ? Friday, September 04, 2009

BAHRAIN'S third swine flu casualty died before doctors could even confirm he had the H1N1 virus.

Bangladeshi Mobarak Ahmed Abdur Rashid, aged 51, died in the Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at around noon yesterday, about 12 hours after being admitted.

"He was suffering from very acute pneumonia and respiratory failure so he was admitted to the ICU immediately," said chief of medical staff Dr Mohammed Amin Al Awadhi.

"Treatment was given but he did not respond.

"We sent swab samples for tests, suspecting he had the H1N1 virus and those returned positive results after he died."

Mr Rashid, who worked as a salesman cum driver at a food and drink establishment in Boori, had been in Bahrain for 23 years, his son Moha-mmed Murad, 25, told the GDN.

"My father had been suffering from cold and cough with fever intermittently for the last five months, since he returned from a vacation to Bangladesh," he said. "However, whenever he received treatment, he got better so we were not much concerned.

"On Wednesday, at around 7pm, he had high fever again so we took him to Al Amal Hospital in Hamad Town, from where they said he had to be referred to the SMC."

Mr Murad said they finally reached the SMC at midnight, where his father was admitted to the ICU.

"They initially told us it was pneumonia he was suffering from, but later said they suspected swine flu," said Mohammed.

"We were also told he may recover but at noon today, we were told he had died."

Another son of Mr Rashid, who is 22, also stayed with him, as did two uncles.

"All five of us shared the same room in Boori," said Mr Murad.

"We have now been told to go to the hospital tomorrow to get medication as well."

Mr Rashid, who was from Chittagong district, also leaves behind his wife, a third son and a daughter in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, a 70-year-old Bahraini woman suffering from swine flu was said to be getting better in the BDF Hospital yesterday, after earlier being described as critically ill.

A BDF Hospital official said she could be discharged in the next few days.

Another Bahraini woman, 50, was still said to be in critical condition at the SMC, more than a week after being admitted to the ICU, said SMC sources.

They said a pregnant Bahraini swine flu victim, whose delivery had to be induced earlier this week at the SMC, was showing signs of improvement but her condition remained critical.

A Bahraini man, in his 40s was also admitted to the hospital early yesterday with acute respiratory failure, suspected to be a result of the H1N1 virus.

Doctors expect test results by today.

"He is critical and under treatment in Ward 207 (a new isolation ward)," said sources.

Two patients - a Filipino man and an Ethiopian woman - who were admitted to the ICU late on Wednesday night were also said to be critical.

"The results have now shown the Filipino man to be positive with the H1N1 virus while the Ethiopian woman has been diagnosed with tuberculosis," said sources.

        Flu victim 'was very ill'

        Posted on ? Monday, October 05, 2009

BAHRAIN's fourth swine flu patient to die after contracting the virus had been "very ill" when he first reported to hospital, BDF sources told the GDN yesterday.

BDF soldier Abdullatif Mohammed Majid, 24, from Arad, was described as a high-risk patient because he was asthmatic and a smoker, who had been taking steroids for a long time to fuel his passion for bodybuilding, they added.

He first reported to BDF Hospital on September 18 at around 9.45pm, but was transferred to the swine flu ward at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) due to a lack of beds at BDF Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

"We treated him very aggressively from the time he came in to the time he died," sources said.

"He was put on anti-viral treatment within 30 minutes of having arrived at the BDF Hospital."

However, they added he was already extremely ill when he reported to the hospital.

"He had been ill for several days before he came to us," said sources.

"He was listed as a category two patient, just below the highly critical category one.

"He was suffering from very acute lung infection and difficulty in breathing and had to be managed aggressively."

They added there was no record of Mr Majid visiting any other health centre before reporting to the BDF Hospital.

Meanwhile, SMC sources revealed he actually showed signs of improvement after initial treatment, but his condition quickly worsened in the days before his death.

"He was brought to the SMC because the BDF Hospital ICU was full that day," they explained.

"He was improving for a while, but deteriorated rapidly in the last few days."

Sources confirmed Mr Majid's pregnant wife had also been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus, but had since made a full recovery.

Filipina Jane Tamad Diale, 31, Bahraini Mousa Jassim Al Taitoon, 24, and Bangladeshi Mobarak Ahmed Abdur Rashid, 54, are the other three swine flu patients to have died in Bahrain since the first case was reported in May.

Woman, 48, dies of swine flu

By MANDEEP SINGH, Posted on ? Thursday, October 08, 2009

MANAMA: A 48-year-old Bahraini woman yesterday became the sixth patient to die from the H1N1 virus in the kingdom.

Fadheela Hassan, from Isa Town, was pronounced dead at the Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) Intensive Care Unit at around 3pm after suffering from acute organ failure, hospital sources said.

Ms Hassan was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago with breathing difficulties and mild cough.

Relatives told doctors that Ms Hassan had gone for a check-up several months ago for a suspected cardiac condition, but had been cleared.

She suffered from no underlying medical conditions that could have contributed to her death, according to the sources.

However, in extremely rare cases the H1N1 virus could affect the heart, they added.

"This is probably what happened in this case, but we are still investigating."
