H1N1 Flu: Bahrain May Bar Elderly and Pregnant Women from Haj
Suad Hamada
10 July 2009
MANAMA ? Bahrain is likely to ban elderly, pregnant women and those with chronic diseases from performing Haj this year as a precautionary measure following the outbreak of swine flu.
A local newspaper, quoting sources from the Ministry of Justice and Islamic Affairs, said that the ministry was negotiating with the Ministry of Health to ban those groups from going forHaj. The two organisations are also discussing all other steps to be taken to protect the health of pilgrims.
The ban aims to control the spread of swine flu cases that reached 27 in Bahrain since the outbreak of the disease internationally.
Other pilgrims will be given tamiflu as precautionary measure to increase their immunity against the virus, while Haj companies would be instructed to improve their health facilities by hiring more doctors and nurses for the trip.
