UAE launches precautions against bird flu

The United Arab Emirates (UAE)'s environment agency has launched precautionary measures against the bird flu for the upcoming migration season of birds, local newspaper Khaleej Times reported on Tuesday.

From the middle of September, migratory birds are expected to pass through the UAE on their migratory routes from the cold northern regions toward the south.

In case some of the migratory birds carry the H5N1 bird flu virus, UAE's Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) has set up 57 monitoring sites throughout the country, said Dr Maan Ahmed Al Hakim of the agency.

"We monitor the birds when they arrive and we also take samples to make sure they are not carrying the H5N1 virus," he said, adding "in case we do find an infected bird, we take immediate high measures, isolating the area and raising awareness among people not to make contact with these birds."

Early this year, the UAE government ordered that no poultry products carried by individuals should be allowed into the country in a bid to prevent the possible entry of bird flu.
