    Doha ? The National Health Authority yesterday organised a drill in the Ras Laffan Industrial City to check the country's preparedness for a possible outbreak of bird flu.

    The exercise was conducted in collaboration with the Hamad Medical Corporation and its Emergency Department , the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture and Qatar Petroleum.

    The drill focussed on a number of important aspects such as identifying the authorities to be contacted in the event of an outbreak of bird flu, applying the health alarm procedures, coordination among the authorities externally and internally and early detection and response to control the situation.

    The event also aimed at preparing the Ras Laffan City to face a situation like a bird flu pandemic.

    Dr Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani, general coordinator of the national bird flu committee, expressed his satisfaction over the positive outcome of the drill. He added that all participants cooperated despite the high temperature and humidity.

    NHA holds programme on tackling emergencies

    THE National Health Authority held the second training programme on how to deal with emergency medical situations in Ras Laffan industrial estate yesterday, the authority said.
    The focus of the programme was on the procedures to be followed in the event of an epidemic such as bird flu. The importance of activating the early warning system and co-ordinating with the agencies concerned in the country and abroad in the event of an epidemic were highlighted.
    The co-ordinator for the committee on bird flu, Dr Mohamed bin Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani said in a statement that yesterday?s training programme was quite successful. All the departments had willingly participated in spite of the extremely humid weather. ?We were able to rectify the minor mistakes that had occurred during the previous programme? he said.
    Among the participants in the programme were the emergency units from the Hamad hospital, the ministry of municipal affairs and agriculture and Qatar Petroleum?s safety and security cell.
