Epidemiological comments On January 31st unexpected mortality was reported in Bojagh, Kiashar area, in the north of Iran, where migratory birds spend their wintering season. On February 4th, the Iran veterinary national reference laboratory confirmed HPAI virus H5N6 in the samples collected from the sick and dead birds. Iran Veterinary Organization (IVO) will continue to monitor the situation in the area closely and to advice poultry flock owners, including owners of backyard poultry, to remain vigilant to the threat of avian influenza and implement strategic, ongoing biosecurity measures ? in particular feeding birds indoors or under cover, and discouraging wild birds from the poultry premises.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Mohammad Mehdi Gouya, the director of the Health Ministry?s Center for Communicable Disease Control, said over the past two years, the H5N8 avian influenza virus has spread to a large number of poultry farms in various provinces, causing significant casualties and heavy economic losses.

The bird flu virus that has recently killed some wild birds in Iran?s northern province of Gilan is the H5N6, which is different to the previous virus (H5N8), he added.

The official further made assurances that there have been no cases of human infection with the H5N6 bird flu in the country, saying that all of the people who had contacts with the wild birds have been vaccinated.

With what I wonder? It seems unlikely they happened to have a matched vaccine for this strain of H5N6.
