Two months after the government's intervention, chaos continues in the poultry market

    Tariq Al-Da'jah
, Amman - The poultry market is still suffering from price chaos and a shortage in the quantities offered for the most consumed weights, despite the passage of two months since citizens complained of a crisis in the chicken meat market, which is a major source of food in the Kingdom.
This crisis, which deepened during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, amid a severe shortage of quantities supplied to the local market during that period, did not find a solution even after the government intervened to monitor the quantities offered in the market and set price ceilings two months ago, according to workers in it.
All parties working in the local market blame each other, farm owners acquit themselves, merchants blame farmers, workers assert the government's negligence, while restaurants that buy large quantities are sacked.
The price of a kilo of chicken scraps is currently 1.9 dinars, while the price set by the government is 1.65 dinars, knowing that the weights sold do not exceed one kilogram, which is not preferred by most people.
While fresh chicken is sold for two dinars in commercial centers as set by the government, some of them impose an additional price on the request for cutting, which is what most people demand, which the Consumer Protection Association called by circumventing the decision to set prices, and its price may reach two and a half dinars.
For its part, the Consumer Protection Association confirmed that it had received dozens of complaints about the lack of chicken in some markets and the high prices in other markets that exceed the price ceilings announced by the ministry.
The head of the association, Dr. Muhammad Obeidat, said, “Some shops have resorted to different methods in order not to adhere to the sale within the price ceilings announced by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, where these malls refuse to sell whole chickens and cut them into pieces and sell them at very high prices higher than the specified price.”
Obeidat added that the problem is still continuing for the second week in a row, and the relevant authorities must find solutions to this problem, because chicken is necessary on the tables of Jordanian families because it is one of the commodities that are considered among their purchasing capabilities, especially after the crazy rise in the prices of meat of all kinds.
Obeidat called on the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply to intensify supervision of all markets in the Kingdom and impose the most severe penalties against violators who do not abide by the specified prices or who practice various methods to escape from selling them within the specified price.
The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply confirmed that work is still going on with the price ceilings it has set on chicken prices since mid-March.
In response to Al-Ghad's inquiries, the ministry indicated that chickens are available in the local market in sufficient quantities, through follow-up and daily monitoring conducted by the control teams in the local market.
The ministry indicated that there is strict control over the markets to ensure compliance with the price ceilings set by the ministry, pointing in this regard to issuing more than 450 violations against shops that exceeded those ceilings.
It is noteworthy that the ministry is referring all violators of the Law of Industry, Trade and Supply, including non-compliance with the price ceilings, to the judiciary, as Article 13 of the Law of Industry and Trade stipulates that anyone who sells a commodity above the specified price shall be punished with a fine of up to 3,000 dinars or imprisonment for a period Not less than two months and not more than six months or both.
Owner of “Natafat” chicken stores, Adel Shehadeh, confirmed that the quantities of chicken supplied are less than the last period, as there is a shortage in quantities.
He explained that the prices of chickens in the market are higher than the prices set by the government, as the price of a kilo of chicken and the stores reached 1.80 dinars, while it is sold to the consumer for 1.90 dinars, calling on the government to control prices in marketing circles.
Shehadeh indicated that it is not in the interest to raise the price in order to increase sales, but the prices are high on the part of suppliers and farm owners.
He stressed that the demand for chicken by citizens in the current period is within the normal rates, pointing out that the weights of chickens that are currently being offered are mostly small, less than one kilogram, which is not desirable by consumers.
However, the representative of the food industries sector in the Jordan Chamber of Industry, Muhammad Walid Al-Jitan, confirmed the existence of a commitment to the price market for poultry at the levels set by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply.
Al-Jitan indicated that chickens are available in the local market in convenient quantities, and there are no problems in the supply chains by farms in favor of the local market.
And he indicated that the Chamber is in constant contact with companies and farms operating within this sector and seeks to solve any problems they face.
On the other hand, a source, who preferred not to be named, confirmed that the shortage of quantities was caused by the supply of large quantities to restaurants. However, Omar Awad, the head of the Syndicate of Restaurant Owners, denied this and said, “Restaurants prefer the small weights that are present in the shops now, and not the large weights that are not present on the shelves of shops.” .
The same source hinted that a large shipment of frozen chicken did not enter the local market due to pressures exerted to exempt it from customs duties, while Al-Ghad was not able to verify this information with documents.
