Iran reimposes virus restrictions as Delta variant spreads

TEHRAN, IRAN -- Iran announced Sunday it was reimposing coronavirus restrictions on major cities, as the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant spurs fears of another devastating surge in the nation.

After over a year battling the worst virus outbreak in the Middle East, Iran ordered the closures of non-essential businesses in 275 cities, including the capital of Tehran.

The shutdown of all public parks, restaurants, dessert shops, beauty salons, malls and bookstores applies to the country's "red" and "orange" zones, or municipalities ranked as having an elevated risk of COVID-19.

The government said it was also imposing a travel ban between cities with high infection rates.

Iran's new restrictions are designed to slow the spread of the highly transmissible delta variant first detected in India, which on Saturday President Hassan Rouhani warned was driving a potential "fifth wave" of infections in the country. Reports of new cases have risen steadily in recent weeks, nearly doubling from from mid-June to early July.

The country has reported a total of 3.2 million infections and 84,627 deaths -- the highest toll in the region.

The spike comes as Iran's vaccine rollout lags, with less than 2 per cent of the population of 84 million fully vaccinated, according to online scientific publication Our World in Data. Iran says it has administered some 6.3 million doses so far. Those shots have mainly come from abroad, including from COVAX, an international initiative meant to distribute vaccines to low- and middle-income countries. Iran also has imported Chinese state-backed Sinopharm vaccines and Russia's Sputnik V vaccine...

Iranians gather in packed Muharram ceremonies amid fifth wave
Videos of observers disregarding health protocols add to public anger as the Delta COVID variant kills hundreds a day.

          11 Aug 2021

Tehran, Iran – Ceremonies to mark the holy Islamic month of Muharram have begun across Iran, even as officials warn that the COVID-19 pandemic is currently claiming a victim every two minutes.

The health ministry on Wednesday said 536 more Iranians died over the past 24 hours as it recorded 42,541 cases amid a fifth major wave of infections, this time defined by the highly contagious Delta variant. Since February 2020, more than 95,000 people have died from the disease.

But videos from several provinces, including Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city, on Tuesday showed observers packed together in closed and open spaces without masks.

Health protocols that still allow some Muharram gatherings to go forward have faced criticism online and in local media. The guidelines allow gatherings in closed spaces, provided they are held at 25-percent capacity and respect physical distancing.

In Tehran, there are numerous mourning ceremonies each day while businesses remain open and public transport is seeing heavy traffic.

The capital currently accounts for roughly a quarter of all deaths across the country...

Iran Health Official Says 50,000 Covid Patients Hospitalized
            Friday, 20 Aug 2021 14:12

As a top official of Iran’s health ministry announced Friday that 50,000 people are hospitalized for Covid-19, a senior doctor in the southwestern Khuzestan province said, “we have crossed from a crisis point to a war situation”.

Deputy health minister in charge of hospitals, Ghassem Janbabaee told local media that every day 30,000 Covid patients visit health centers and in some provinces such as Esfahan and Fars infections are still rising.

Iran on Thursday crossed the 100,000-mark for Covid deaths according to official government number that many say are much less than the real figure. Some have put the death toll at 2.5 times the health ministry’s published numbers...
