Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the announcement in a televised speech Sunday.
Beginning Friday, the eve of the Jewish New Year, schools, restaurants, malls and hotels among other businesses will shut down and restrictions on movement will be imposed. The lockdown is expected to last at least three weeks, when measures may be eased depending on morbidity.

Israel reports record daily rise in COVID-19 fatalities

JERUSALEM, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli Ministry of Health reported 30 new COVID-19 death cases on Saturday, bringing the total fatalities to 1,226.
This is the highest daily rise in death cases since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country in late February, as the previous record was 27, registered on Friday.
The COVID-19 cases in Israel rose by 4,531 within one day to a total of 183,602.
The number of patients in serious condition increased from 581 to a record high of 604, out of 1,244 patients currently hospitalized.
The number of recoveries reached 132,449, with 2,425 new recoveries, while active cases currently stand at 49,927...

JERUSALEM -- Israel on Thursday moved to further tighten its second countrywide lockdown as coronavirus cases continued to soar, ordering all nonessential businesses to close and requiring people to stay within 1,000 metres (yards) of their homes.
Prayers during the ongoing Jewish High Holidays, as well as political demonstrations, would be limited to open spaces and no more than 20 people, and participants would have to remain within the restricted distance from home.
The measures are set to go into force on Friday afternoon, as the country shuts down for the weekly Sabbath ahead of the solemn holy day of Yom Kippur on Sunday and Monday. Even during normal times, Israel completely shuts down for Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, with businesses and airports closed, roads empty, and even radio and television stations going silent...

The country headed into a tighter closure at 2 p.m. on Friday just before the Health Ministry released a new set of numbers showing that more than 8,000 people were diagnosed with coronavirus the day before.
Of the 66,640 people screened for coronavirus, some 8,178 were positive - 12.2%. Some 708 people are in serious condition, including 178 on ventilators...
