    Medical officials monitoring Pan Am health risks
    A Kingston public health group is using a real-time surveillance system to track public health concerns.

    It?s not all fun and games. Behind the scenes at the Pan Am Games, one group is taking on a serious responsibility: monitoring the Southern Ontario region for possible diseases or environmental concerns that could put the public at risk.

    Health surveillance during mass gathering events is common, but the computer system these public health workers use isn?t run-of-the-mill.

    The group of 10 from Kingston, Ont., monitor a real-time surveillance system called Acute Care Enhanced Surveillance (ACES), that has information coming in from 68 hospitals and 10 public health units near Pan Am venues.

    ?In real-time, emergency departments are sending us an electronic signal of who is showing up with what chief complaint, and how sick they are,? said Kieran Moore, associate medical officer of health with Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Public Health...
