Pakistan confirms 9 new polio cases, 1 each in China, Angola
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) today reported nine new cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1), and, for the first time in more than a year, China has confirmed a case of vaccine-derived poliovirus.
In addition, Angola has a new circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) case.
The Pakistan patients reported symptom onset on dates ranging from May 28 to Jun 20. The total number of WPV1 cases recorded in Pakistan this year is now 41; last year, the country recorded 12 cases over the entire year. Five of the nine cases originated in Bannu province, where health workers have been targeted by anti-vaccine extremists.
In China, a cVDPV2 isolate was identified in a stool sample of an acute flaccid paralysis patient from Sichuan province. The person experienced symptom onset on Apr 25. According to data from the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), China reported three cases of cVDPV3 in 2017 and the first part of 2018.
Finally, Angola recorded its second case of cVDPV2 this year, in Kuvango district, Huila province, with symptom onset on May 30.

CDC ends investigation into E coli O26 outbreak linked to tainted flour
The CDC said yesterday it has ended its investigation into an outbreak of Escherichia coli O126 connected to tainted flour after 21 cases.
"This outbreak appears to be over, but the recalled flour products have long shelf lives and may still be in people?s homes. Consumers who don't know about the recalls could continue to eat the products and get sick," the CDC said.
A total of 21 people in 9 states were affected in this outbreak, which resulted in 3 hospitalizations but no deaths. Baking mixes and several flour products were involved in the outbreak, from brands including Aldi Baker's Corner, King Arthur, Pillsbury, and Brand Castle Mixes.
Case-patients reported illnesses starting on dates ranging from Dec 11, 2018, to May 21, 2019, and 46% reported eating, licking, or tasting raw, homemade dough or batter in the week prior to illness, the CDC said.
New York state reported the most cases, with 7, followed by Ohio (5). Massachusetts and Pennsylvania recorded 2 cases each, and California, Connecticut, Missouri, New Jersey, and Rhode Island each had 1 case.

UNICEF launches measles campaign in Ituri province, DRC
The United Nations Children?s Fund (UNICEF) yesterday announced the launch of a campaign to vaccinate 67,000 children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's (DRC's) Ituri province against measles.
The province is one of two in the grips of the world?s second-largest Ebola outbreak, which has been ongoing for the past year. In addition to Ebola, the DRC has seen almost 2,000 deaths from measles this year, and more than 60% of those fatalities have been in children under the age of 5.
"Latest health data from DRC point to around 115,000 cases of suspected measles in the country, far more than the 65,000 tally last year," UNICEF said in a press release.
The campaign will initially focus on 27,000 children in Bunia, the largest town in Ituri and home to thousands of displaced persons housed in makeshift camps.
"The combined threat of Ebola and measles for the thousands of families living in overcrowded and unsanitary displacement camps is unprecedented," said UNICEF DRC Representative Edouard Beigbeder.
