2014 finds us deep into a 2nd wave of H7N9 type flu emerging from China. Several cases have been exported to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Malaysia.

A few weeks ago a Canadian woman visiting China came home infected with H5N1 and died. To date no source for this infection has been officially determined and, remarkably, China has not announced a human case for a year.

There have been 3 recent human cases of a new avian influenza in China called H10N8. 2 died. What is the extent of this spread?

It seems the global push for health security announced today by the US, World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization, and many countries should begin by quantifying the emerging influenza situations in China.

The US falls to 46th in press freedom as ranked by Reporters Without Borders.

    This says a lot.

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” MLK, Jr.

I needed a few days before I could post about the latest mass murder spree in the United States. As most of you probably know a mentally ill young man killed 6 people in Isla Vista which is the town where the University of California at Santa Barbara is located. He reportedly used a hammer, knives, guns, and his automobile to kill and injure innocent people. He was apparently under a doctor's care for his various long term mental and emotional issues. He expressed via youtube and writings a hatred for women and problems with socializing in general.

After killing his roommates and a visiting friend he went to a sorority to "massacre" them because they are the "hottest" group on that campus. His intent was to kill as many as he could. He knocked at the door but the women inside did not open it. He then turned and shot 3 women on the sidewalk. Two died.

        That sorority is my sorority.

It is a leading sorority in the United States and Canada. A basic goal is to create leadership skills and opportunities for women. It is a very progressive group leading campus reforms and opening doors for women since 1872.

I can not imagine what would have happened if they had let him in. Typically 65 women live in the houses. Slaughtered because they are women. For being leaders on their campus.

So sad. Since it is not practical to ban all hammers, knives, guns, cars, we need better methods to evaluate the true potential for violence in individuals who are displaying mental and emotional problems. This latest killing rampage is part of a trend where young mentally ill men act out violently against society.

What can be done to stop desperately unhappy young men with mental and emotional problems from "going over the edge"? How can we instill a hope for their future that they have forsaken. How many more young men in our society are living on the fringe of sanity? How is the current public health infrastructure failing in this regard over and over?

            Guinea

When Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) arrived in Guinea in February, no correct map of the area was available to them, not even on Google Map where satellite images of Guinea, showed blurred color areas in beige and yellow. Guéckédou, a city of 220,000 inhabitants, located in the heart of the epidemic showed only the outlines of buildings.

At the request of MSF, a team of humanitarians and Internet users of OpenStreetMap service has successfully mapped the city "within a day" in precisely locating the various cases of hemorrhagic fever and tracing the contours of the entire region.

OpenStreetMap is the name of the international project founded in 2004 which aims to create a map freely accessible all over the world and on the web. Volunteer contributors collect data from around the world, such as roads, railways, rivers, forests, buildings and draw up maps when needed! All this information is reusable under a free license on the internet.

In the case of Guinea, the response of the OpenStreetMap community has been impressive with over 300 volunteers in 10 days who added to blank digital maps, 1.2 million identifiable objects such as bridges, information on the nature of land, more than 150 000 buildings and documented about 5,000 places.
