I think your analysis of the dates is correct. This AP article is not mentioning the 3 deaths.

13 Indonesians hospitalized with bird flu symptoms
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- Health workers rushed to a village in western Indonesia to test for bird flu Thursday after 13 people were hospitalized with symptoms of the disease and dozens of chickens died, a government official said.
It will take days for test results to come back, said Memed Zulkarnaen, spokesman for the National Bird Flu Commission, adding that the condition of those suffering from high fever and respiratory problems "appears to be improving."
The 13 were admitted to two hospitals in the past week after chickens started dying in Air Batu, their village on Sumatra island, 680 miles (1,000 kilometers) northwest of the capital, Jakarta. The birds tested positive for the H5N1 virus.
A team of epidemiologists was sent to the village Thursday to take blood and swab samples from family members and neighbors of those living near the outbreak, Zulkarnaen said.
Indonesia has regularly recorded human deaths from bird flu since the virus began ravaging poultry stocks across Asia in 2003. Its death toll of 112 accounts for nearly half the 240 recorded fatalities worldwide.
Bird flu remains hard for people to catch, but health experts worry the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily between humans, possibly triggering a pandemic that could kill millions. So far most human cases have been linked to contact with infected birds.

Seems the news reports have dropped the mention of the 3 deaths.

Still trying to get more info......
The three dead are buried and will NOT be tested.

We may never know with 100% certainty what caused the deaths of these individuals.

A thorough epidemiological study of this outbreak would be useful.

There will be NO effort to even try to explain their deaths (other than some hand waving). This is a Garut re-run.

Re: Suspected Bird Flu Outbreak in Indonesia Hospitalizes 13, 3 Suspected Deaths

Seems they would test suspects BEFORE Tamiflu, instead of after. I feel they just want to hide and cover up any sign of a positive H5N1 infection. It seems that the worse the cases get the more deceptive the practice. There is more to it than just "affordable vaccines for their people". When it turns into sustainable h2h transmission it will be too late and other countries will be ramping up to make vaccines for their people first, which leaves Indonesians out even if affordable. Once h2h starts and leaves the island there will be no need for their samples of the virus, other countries will have their own. What are these people thinking, definetly not about there citizens or the world.

For Garut, there were three confimed cases which were not related to each other, but each was linked to one or more people who had just died with bird flu symptoms. The FIVE dead were buried and never tested. Contacts of the three H5N1 confirmed cases then developed symtoms, but they were given Tamiflu (and a Tamiflu blanket was thrown over several villages) and tested negative, even though some had been in ICU. Although there were about 30 suspect cases (either dead or hsopitalized), only 3 were H5N1 confirmed.

At this point we cannot say whether Sumatran people are infected or not. Also, we cannot say that oseltamivir is so effective to reduce febrile and respiratory symptoms so rapidly in these people.

Details are too much fragmented, and an uncompleted scenario hardly helps us to understand the situation.

WHO seems to be engaged in laboratory testing.

We must continue to monitor the media for futher developments.

Expected by Bird Flu, three Died
                            Kamis, 07 Agustus 2008

Asahan - After for a long time in decline, the bird flu virus began to rage again. As many as 12 residents of the IV Pondok Damuli Village, Kecamatan Air Batu, of Kabupaten Asahan, North Sumatra, were suspected to be infected by the virus avian influenza (AI) and were forced to be taken to RSU Kisaran on Monday (4/8). Until Tuesday (5/8), the 12 patients were still being treated in the room of VIP. In fact in a week it was recorded that three suspect bird flu patients had died. However, the local Health Service could not confirm whether the deaths were caused by bird flu, because the burials for the patients who died were rushed. A reporter in RSU Kisaran on Tuesday night around 21,30 WIB, observed that the 12 patients were visited by a Health Service official. The Dinkes official put on a mask before entering the rooms of the bird flu suspect patients. One of the doctors in RSU Kisaran said that his personnel did not yet know decisively whether or not the 12 patients were positive bird flu. Because, the sample of their blood was sent to the laboratory in Jakarta on Tuesday night.
"How we every yes... According to me, this is not bird flu. However, the signs that were found in the patients indeed are signs of those affected by bird flu. For example, the fever, flu, limplessness, and breathlessness," said the doctor who reluctantly was named by his name.

The doctor, who had some faded (grey?) hair, said that the 12 patients came from the IV Village, Pondok Damuli, Subdistrict Air Batu. Several patients were reconciled to RSU Adam Malik, Medan, because their conditions were increasingly weak. In the meantime, the Health Service speaking through the Head of Sector P2P, Yusnan Pane, said that his office received the report from the community and the RSU personnel about the existence of the residents who were taken to RSU Kisaran because of bird flu infection. Yusnan confirmed information from the Asahan County Livestock Service that in this area they poultry that died suddenly who were expected to be infected with bird flu. Only he could not give the comment in more detail, because, the death of the poultry is the responsibility of the Livestock Service. Dinkes, said Yusnan, cooperated in handling the 12 patents with health officials from the North Sumatran Province.

"The patients' blood samples have been sent to Jakarta. We do not yet know when the results will descend. But hopefully by this Sunday the results will descend," said Yusnan when being met in front of the main space of RSU Kisaran. Asked for the patients' data, he said that all were still being treated.

"From the field I have just observed the matter of the bird flu to the office, there I complete this data," he said. According to Yusnan, Asahan County Livestock Agency destroyed the poultry in this area, because according to local community information, there were several poultries that died suddenly. That was carried out to anticipate the expansion of this virus.

"If the poultry were not positively attacked by bird flu, why were they destroyed? Precisely because they were positive, therefore they were destroyed," he said

                                Avian Flu strikes Indonesia again
                                07/08/08

Avian Influenza virus has hit Indonesia killing three people with 13 others admitted to hospital with symptoms. Residents in Asahan district of North Sumatra province say last week, villagers began showing symptoms of avian flu after a large number of chickens died suddenly. A baby boy and a seven year old girl were transferred early this morning to a bird flu isolation unit at Adam Malik hospital in the provincial capital of Medan.

A spokesperson at the hospital, Sinar Ginting confirmed that blood samples from the two children when tested revealed the virus. The Ministry, which has stopped giving regular bird flu updates, announced earlier this week that the human toll from avian influenza in Indonesia has risen to one hundred and 12 with the recent death of a 19 year old man. Indonesia is the worst hit country by the deadly H5NI strain of bird flu, which can be passed from bird to human.
