Kisaran is the capitol of the Asahan Regency, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia.

It sits on the Asahan River, a small city, couple miles square. It appears that Air Batu is a district in the Kisaran subregency and its seat is Air Batu village.

This is a fairly rural area, south of the North Sumatra capitol of Medan and SW of the Karo Regency capitol of Kabenjahe.

A map showing the location of the Karo Regency former outbreak with respect to this suspected outbreak in Kisan, would be useful.

The map isn't very useful, since it doesn't show the location of Air Batu. Google Map of the locale doesn't provide village level geography (scale, 1 mile or less). I had already accessed Google Maps in a search for Air Batu Village.

I did find an Air Batu village in the Central Sumatran Province of Jambi, Bangko Regency, sungai (River) Manau District.

Thirteen people from a village in Indonesia's North Sumatra province have been hospitalized after suffering symptoms of bird flu, a media report said on Wednesday.
Sinar Ginting, a spokesman for the Adam Malik hospital in North Sumatra's capital Medan, was quoted by Kompas.com as saying that two patients from the group had been transferred to the hospital early on Wednesday morning.
The other 11 from Air Batu village were being treated in a local hospital, he said.
"They have bird flu symptoms such as fever and breathing difficulties," Ginting was quoted as saying.
Not all the patients were believed to have had contact with fowl, which is the most common way of contracting the virus, but Ginting said some chickens in the area had died suddenly and were found to have had the deadly H5N1 virus.
Indonesian health ministry officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
The Southeast Asian country has had 111 confirmed human bird flu deaths, the highest in the world.
Suspected cluster cases happening in the same vicinity can raise concerns about rare human-to-human transmission.
Although bird flu remains mainly an animal disease, experts fear the H5N1 virus might mutate into a form easily passed between humans, causing a pandemic.

Three people have died and 13 have been admitted to hospital with symptoms of bird flu in Indonesia, a nurse treating the patients said Wednesday.

Officials and residents in Asahan district of North Sumatra province said villagers began showing symptoms of avian flu after a large number of chickens died suddenly last week.

The nurse at Asahan district's Kisaran hospital said three people had died after suffering bird flu-like symptoms in Air Batu village.

Most of the members of the Karo cluster were also treated at Adam Malik. The large number of adults in the above list suggests the cases represent multiple families.

The H5N1 status in Indonesia has been cloudy because of reporting failures by the Indonesian government, WHO, or both. Although Indonesia has acknowledged two lab confirmed cases in Tangerang last month, WHO has yet to publish updates on these patients. Similarly, the reporting of the cases preceding the cases last week would reported weeks after confirmation in violation of IHR regulations. The earlier cases were members of clusters, which Indonesia failed to confirm and WHO failed to acknowledge.

WHO?s continuing failure to report these clusters in Indonesia remains a cause for concern.

Details on this large cluster and an explanation from WHO on its glaring oversight failures would be useful.
